Ex-Thai PM Thaksin holds Nicaraguan passport-gov't

MANAGUA, April 15 (Reuters) - Ousted Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra is a "special ambassador" for Nicaragua and holds a diplomatic passport issued by the Central American country, the government said on Wednesday.

Thaksin received the passport after a February meeting with Nicaraguan President Daniel Ortega, the Nicaraguan government said in a press release.

The Thai government stripped Thaksin of his passport this week, accusing him of instigating violent protests that forced the cancellation of an Asian summit.

Thaksin has lived in self-imposed exile to avoid a two-year jail sentence on corruption and abuse of power charges after being deposed by a coup in 2006. It is unknown where he is now living.

Ortega appointed him to the post to help attract investment to the impoverished nation, the government said.

Protesters loyal to Thaksin surrendered on Tuesday after besieging Government House in the capital, Bangkok, for more than two weeks in a bid to force new elections. Two people were killed in the unrest. (Reporting by Ivan Castro; Editing by Peter Cooney)

Has he therefor also Nicaraguan citizenship? Or can you have a passport without being a citizen?

Holding a passport of a country and having citizenship does tend to go hand in hand. It's not a magical unreachable status (like it is in some countries) in many countries. It's often just a matter of whatever passport authority deeming that you should have a passport (and in many cases diplomatic passport) of said country. For example, all of the Srichaphans : Paradorn, Chanachai, Thanakorn, Narathorn, etc. all have diplomatic Thai passports -which always renew as diplomatic- despite not having much to do with Thai tennis abroad any more. All because whoever was impressed after some tournament Paradorn won and arbitrarily made the decision at the time.

With Toxin's dosh he could buy an island and set ùp his own "country". No doubt all the crap holes on the planet like Nicaragua would welcome such a person.

I'd bet that he could even fly in and out of Thailand through Chiang Mai, the same way Kamnan Poh is quietly living out his days in Bangsaan, Cholburi, and the way Vattana Asavahame could probably do the same (if he isn't already) in Samutprakarn.

No surprise he already covered that base before coming out and antagonising the current government further.

Don't like the guy but the opposition have always been one step behind and continue to be.

I believe that diplomatic immunity ONLY applies to a country that the holder is accredited to. Traveling around the world on a dip passport doesn't really accord the holder of dip privileges unless just by courtesy, for example, at airports & immigrations.

Regarding Nicaragua, how about a demonstration at their consulate down on Sukumvit?

Here's the historical facts:

1. Nicaragua is the fourth place in this wretched earth where communists wrest power post-WW II (#1 China, #2 Vietnam, #3 Cuba).

2. Vietnam had controlled Laos through involvement in communist coup as well as in Cambodia, which has been used as a platform for anti-Thailand movement recently.

3. Nicaragua has been hard-pressed by the US govt (remember Contra Scandal during Reagan Administration?)

4. It's the Cold-War all over again. Don't forget Thailand is surrounded from the northern side by communist-led states.
