Police probe Pattaya suicide

Published on January 28, 2005

Chon Buri - A Dutchman killed himself in a strange manner in Chon Buri’s Bang Lamung district, covering his head with a plastic bag containing a gas canister, police said yesterday.

At 12.30am yesterday, police received a report of a foreign suicide in a South Pattaya apartment, said Lt-Colonel Anan Thammachaikung, of Pattaya police station.

The body of Ven Eijcswijk Josephus Johannes, 47, of the Netherlands, was found lying on a bed in a third-floor room of a four-storey townhouse. His feet were tied together, and his head was covered with a plastic bag, inside of which was a canister of gas, said Anan. There were no signs of a struggle.

A friend of the deceased, Piet Spoecstra, 47, also of the Netherlands, told police that Johannes had been living off of some hotel investments in Thailand for seven years. Over the past year, Johannes complained that he had been cheated out of all his money, forcing him to subsist by collecting second-hand items to sell to junkyards. Spoecstra said he had not seen Johannes for four days, so he went to his apartment, where he found the body and called police.

Police suspect Johannes killed himself because of stress caused by his financial losses, but his body will be sent for an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Perhaps we need TV members to establish a list for their respective embassies.

I'll start. I categorically state for the official record that if MY corpse ever turns up in a similiar way, it was NOT suicide.

Me too - I'm not going to do myself in either.

& if I did - I wouldn't tie my feet together first either....

Suicide my ass...

I think I'd OD on Viagra - at least it'd give the coroner a laugh - first time rigor mortis set in before death...

I wonder if this suicide's hands were tied behind his back?

The news back in Holland says that he was not tied up, apart from plastic bag around his head+rope and that the small gascontainer was found next to his body; in other similar (murder)-cases they were tied up.

I don't know if it's true or not.

Maybe its time that the new arrivals card had a section dedicated to potential overseas tourists coming to LOS to do a sideways Exit.

Time, place, method,(now mostly sky jumpers and plastic bags over heads)and even better .....expected length of stay.

This could be in the section before estimated Income.(good clue for reasons)

It really would make life a lot easier for the sunshine boys and girls in the Embassys,Ploddie Dept and Immigration :o:D

I saw a pic of it today on a Thai newspaper, the body was not tied up but there was a plastic bag and cannister.

I find it strange that in other parts of the world, a plastic bag is not a common thing to be used in order to commit suicide. Farangs somehow end up using that method it here??? I think a very high percentage of "suicides" by plastic bag over the head are indeed covered up murders.

Most Thai's know that Chonburi is a bit of a hotbed for mafia activities in Thailand, but - and please excuse my ignornace here as a Bangkok lad who avoids Pattaya wherever possible - what are these farang blokes getting themselves into?????

People commit suicide in the most weird of ways... For a start the person is not in a normal state of mind when finally deciding 'how' to do it? One of the worst I read of, was a guy that removed the matress from one of those old beds with the 'diamond' wire bases, lit large candles under it and lay on the bed while the candles burned into his spine. When he was found, his spine was carbonised. Makes one wonder, how anybody could stand that much pain.

Rav, the only problem is that sooooo many people here commit suicide. When at least in 50% of the time it is much easier for the boys in brown to declare suicide even when it is 100% obvious that the guy or girl got waxed!

Maybe the 'gas' was 'laughing gas'?  Don't suppose he could have laughed himself to death???  :o  :D  :D

I know... that was in real bad taste. Blame it on English humor.  :D

The funniest and most black humour books that I have read about cops are by Joseph Wambaugh...blackest and funniest humour that has ever come out of America. His first book was made into a movie, called "Choirboys", but he has many others.Joseph was a LAPD cop for 12 years before he started writing.

Is there anyway, the mods could actually post the amount of supposed suicides that we have read on here over the years?

I think it would be quite a few hundred?

100s - you jest , it must be up in the four figures if you add in all the mystery deaths .

you could trawl thru all the back numbers of the post and nation if you had plenty time

for say writing a book about all the thailand deaths .

you could definately fill a book with all the cases of dead farangs (all types ).

its a book thats never been written yet .

it must start with Charles Sobrage the homicidal maniac back in the 70s

Reading this thread reminds me of an incident that happened to me three years ago, on my first visit to Pattaya. It has also provided me with some chilling answers to questions i had wondered about.

I had been there a few days when one night i walked into a certain bar. I spent the evening talking with the farang owner and a friend of his who was visiting from the UK. During the course of the conversations i revealed that i was travelling alone and had just recently arrived in Thailand, and Pattaya. The owner also revealed a little about himself, enough to give me the impression that he had been involved in the criminal underworld back home in the UK.

They invited me out on the town, and as i was new they suggested that they show me around. Although they seemed slightly dubious characters they had been quite friendly, so i decided that maybe it would be fun. One of them was even good enough to give me a lift on his motorbike to a cash point so that i could withdraw money for the evening.

They took me to a couple of bars on walking street where we had several drinks before one of them told me that we would be going to a club next. They said they would be doing some E's and would i like one as well. At the time this was something i occasionally indulged in back home in England, so i said yes and gave the bloke some money and he left the bar.

Half an hour later the remaining bloke and i left the bar to meet him. Standing at the rendezvous point i noticed him exiting a pharmacy further up the road. Despite being very drunk by this stage i realised that there was a good chance i was about to get ripped off, and although what i was given looked very similar to what i would have expected it was not convincing. I put it in my pocket rather than take it as my mind was trying to work out what they had given me if it was not the real thing, seeing as how they would be spending the next couple of hours with me.

We went to a club, and over the course of the next forty five minutes they kept asking me whether i was feeling anything yet to which i replied in the negative but maintained the pretence that i had taken it. I was getting more and more suspicious of their behaviour, especially as i could tell that they had certainly not taken any E's either. At one stage i approached the two of them as they were having a conversation whilst looking down onto the dancefloor from the 1st floor. I was within a couple of yards from them and they were unable to see me standing behind them in the darkness, when one of them turned to the other and said 'lets just f***ing gas him'.

I sat back down at our table and talked to some of the ladies that had joined us. Five minutes later the blokes returned and suggested leaving for another place that they knew. There was no way that i was going anywhere else with them, and when we got outside i got on a motorbike taxi and was taken back to my hotel.

I stopped at a quiet bar near my hotel and pondered over exactly what had been happening during that evening and decided that whatever it was they had given me held the key. If it was really what it was meant to be then maybe my imagination had been getting carried away. I decided to take the pill, and fifteen minutes minutes later it hit me. I suddenly felt my head rushing and realised i was very quickly losing consciousness. I staggered back to my hotel, and i have no recollection of actually arriving there. At eight in the morning i suddenly awoke to find myself sprawled on the bed in my hotel room.

To this day i have assumed that had my suspicions not been aroused i would no longer be alive, and would have gone missing, maybe my body would have been found, maybe not. However, i had always wondered what lay in store for me with their intention to 'gas' me. I think this thread has provided me with the answer.

I agree that i was stupid to take it anyway, my curiosity got the better of me. I wasn't surprised by the result. You are also correct in assuming that i did not inform the authorities. As much as i wanted to, i was very concerned as to what my position would of been in light of my actions, and ultimately i would have had no proof of any wrong doing. Unfortunately that means that the perpetrators may still be at large in Pattaya.

you cant buy knockout drugs from the pharmacies in Pattaya , they clamped down on the sale of anything remotely likely to drug people as Pattaya had a reputation for Micky Finns being administered . THat happended many years ago.

you cant even buy a low does Valium over the counter ,let alone sleeping tablets .

But that is not to say that lowlifers are unable to obtain them from elsewhere and bring them to Pattaya .

On February 17, 1997, the Serpent walked out of Tihar Prison. He was in the prime of life, 52 years old. There was little chance that Thai officials could make a case against him so many years later, but Charles was a man without a country. He was to be deported from India, so he was kept in custody until authorities found a country that would take him.

In the end, he returned to France where today he charges reporters for interviews. In March 2002 an Indian film company announced that it was making a film about his life. The project is not exactly a Sobhraj biography "because we have taken some creative liberties, and because it’s not an exact biography of his life," the assistant director told Nihar Online, an Indian Web-based newspaper. ”The film will in no way glorify a killer. It is instead a question of man, morality and redemption."

The "grandfather of ChonBuri" will have his sons elected again...just vote for number 9. :o

When I asked my wife about why they would be voting for the young guys, she said because everybody loves them, I asked her even after what their father has allegedly been involved with? she said yes, everybody has forgotten the father now :D

Could never happen in many other countries.
