Unless the situation has changed in the past year or so, Malaysia doesn't have the same situation as Thailand where you can purchase an internet starter pack over the counter. The last time I was there you had to register first, which was simple but took about 3 days. The alternatives are:

Stay in a 5* hotel which has in-room access. (Sheraton & Equatorial both have this facility)

Use a hotel's or guest houses computer

Use an Internet cafe

I am not certain, although it is probably LAN access, so your laptop will need either a built in LAN connection or pcmcia LAN card.

You might also want to consider Maglobe, a prepaid world wide Internet Access. You can buy time with Credit Card, and use it with local Dial in Numbers worldwide. At around 6$ per hour (in Malaysia, other Countries differ) it is rather costly for extensive use, but to check your Email daily on short trips it definitely makes sense.

To the best of my knowledge, it is still the case that Malaysia does not have over-the-counter Internet access packages.

I have had a prepaid Internet account in Malaysia since 2001 with Jaring. Seems to me that the usage cost is RM 0.60/hour with an annual service charge of RM 20. It's not worth getting into something like this if your trip to Malaysia is a one-off, but if you travel to Malaysia several times per year it may be worth considering signing up. Jaring has dial-up points all over Malaysia as well as a general dial-in number that works pretty much everywhere.
