davejonesbkk
I just bought a vga (15 pin) to composite cable (red/yellow/white) so that I can connect my compaq presario laptop to my samsung hdtv. Plugged it in, nothing happened, read online that you need to press fn+ one of the f numbers (eg f4) tried that, nothing happened. Tried all f numbers....nothing. Done some searches on Google but no luck so far Any tips?

But you have to find out how to switch YOUR COMPUTER to an external display - there is no standard. In addition to this you have to switch your TV to an input source where it can read the data - mostly called Computer. If this all does not help you have to read the manual of your graphic card and of your TV. There is no standard. So you really have to read an try. The companies spend so much money to make the graphic cards faster. But it seems they spend no money at all to make them easier to use. ATI for instance loads more than 50 MBs into the computer memory so that you can change any setting. The loaded result is a shame for every programmer. Johnxxx
If nothing works than look for a converter. They cost Baht 1000 to 1500 and allow you to connect your computer to any TV...of the old stile. They convert the signal from a standard computer monitor output to S-VHS and composite (the yellow plug). Power for this they get from an USB port. But you say you have a modern TV. Then it should be possible to connect it with a simple MONITOR cable and no converter. But again - you might have to switch the input at your TV to computer then. marcus
I just bought a vga (15 pin) to composite cable (red/yellow/white) so that I can connect my compaq presario laptop to my samsung hdtv. I wonder what cable you have : VGA is "video only", the red and white composite inputs on your TV are for sound, so in fact you send the video signal of your PC to the audio input of your TV, no wonder it doesn't work ! You say you have a HDTV, so probably your TV has a VGA input too ! If so, all you need is a simple VGA cable. Just be aware that according to this thread, there are 2 different kinds of cables
