Thai Style Dress

Featured Replies

This forum seems to be mainly men so I apologize for the question, hoping someone here will have some experience! I'm marrying my thai fiance this winter and we are going to have a thai ceremony as part of the wedding. I wanted to have a thai gown for the occasion. Just wanted to put my feelers out there and see if there are any tailors or shops that are trustworthy (trying to avoid thai tailor scam) that will ship to the USA. Anybody know of anyone?

I suspect you might get a better response if you asked a moderator to move this to the ladies forum.

Firstly though, to clarify, do you want a tailors shop or a shop that does traditional Thai silk wedding gear? They are not one and the same. And with the Thai traditional garb you can get el-cheapo stuff in the market (which can look ok) right through to the sort of gear you could wear in a movie.

If it is the really nice stuff you want, I know a place here in Chiang Mai that is very good. We used them for our wedding but I would have to go and see them to get contact details and ask about shipping. I also think you would have a hel_l of a job trying to do it via the net (or maybe you/they have web cam?)

Maybe you could look online or even try looking on Ebay. Hope you find what you are looking for.

Just thinking about it, why dont you buy a large one, get it shipped to the US and then get it altered by some dressmaker there, or buy the fabric here in Thailand and make it in the US.

I agree with the other comment, it will be very difficult to make this dress when you are not even in Thailand.

My wife has a tailor, who is also her friend. 100 % trustworthy, but I think no or almost no English.

And I need to warn you, clothes looking beautiful on Thais may look terrible on Farangs. My mother bought some clothes, perfect in quality but it looks somehow different on a Farang body, with Farang skin.....

Actually I would prefer NOT to have it tailor made for the reasons you all are suggesting, it might turn into a nightmare! I just wasn't sure if it would be possible to buy pre-made ones and have them shipped. I love the idea of buying a large size and having it altered down - in fact that is exactly what I did with my wedding gown! I already have a woman here who is wonderful at altering silk gowns so that is definitely an option. My only worry about buying a premade dress is that although I am slim enough to fit thai sizes, my problem while there was the length. I am 5'6 and often the clothes were just too short on me. Maybe the fabric idea is the best after all haha. I am not too worried about thai clothes looking ugly on me since I am caucasian, I do know that I need to avoid some colors that are popular amongst thais but there are others that will look very nice I think.

hi,

i will move this to our ladies forum ; btw, u can search our forum as we all have discussed our weddings and some of us posted our pics too...

as for colours: my mother in law and sisters in law chose out of three different 'suits' that i had brought with m e , but hen again, this was my second marriage, we were/are poor so couldnt buy traditional wedding costume, i am over 40, and i couldnt really care less what i wore...

but some others of us had a real trauma with the colouurs, styles etc...

it also depends on economic and social background of your fiance.... my husband is total country boy and anyway doesnt care about clothes. if u are marrying a hi so city boy well thats a whole new kettle of fish...

oh, welcome to ladies forum

Martha I tried many off-the-rack traditional outfits here in Bangkok prior to my wedding. There is a whole area in Chinatown that is devoted to traditional Thai clothes for weddings. I only purchased a few bits and pieces as I already had others. But finding a whole set would not have been a problem, even in my size. I am about the same height as you and considered an XXL in Thailand (US size 12-14). I have no idea about any companies that might ship though, unfortunately.

the area where you can get the dresses already made is called

Pahurat

you can also get fabric in some shops in the same area.

hard to advise if they will ship, or give contact detail of one or 2 shops.

its a whole street filled with such shops.

good luck, and congrats on the wedding :)

A little late, but it's better than none...

When I got married to my first husband, I had my dress made in Thailand and sent over. It was an involved process with many e-mails and phone calls to family members who went and negotiated the whole process in person, but in the end the dress was beautiful. I'm not sure what resources are available to you (for me, I had my soon-to-be-in-laws willing to be the middle man), but the website I used was www.ramthai.com. And just like with so many things, the price is negotiable.

Congrats!

Sorry to change the subject but:

discombobulated
.

That's a new word for me and I even had to google it. It has a nice ring to it, I look forward to using it myself.

Thanks, back on subject then.
