Bipolar And Add Medications.

Featured Replies

I have been contacted by a friend that wishes to come to Thailand on a extended vacation and is a bit worried about the availability of her medications. Although not life threatening if she doesn't take them, she would feel a lot more comfortable knowing that she can get them if needed.

What she needs is the cost and availability of:

Vyvance (Adderall or Ritalin will do), and Lamictal (generic is Lamotrigine).

The first one is for ADD, the second for bipolar disorder.

My friend is from the States and can apparently only get a 1 months supply at a time.

Thanks

Sorry, I don't know anything about theses medications and if the are available without prescription. I know that the hospitals will most likely stock the meds, but maybe they are also available over the counter at regular pharmacies? Sure to be cheaper than the hospitals.

Lamictal and Ritalin are both available at hospitals. Adderal is a banned substance in Thailand.

Would bringing her prescription from the States be sufficient to acquire the meds from a hospital? Any idea of the costs?

Not all hospitals stock all medications. I was on Venlafaxine and had to hunt around for a private hospital that stocked it. Phone around a few to locate the hospital that has the medication required, it'll save on the legs. I couldn't even persuade my local government hospital to order my medication. Due to the difficulties I endured, getting my fix, it gave me the will to come off them.

I tried that. At the hospital I used, they wouldn't accept. I had to pay a high price for my medication because it was an import. The doctor, I saw, wasn't sypathetic to my plight and sniggered when he said to my wife "why don't you just take him down to the temple ?" A normal thing to do in rural Thailand, with people that have mental health problems. The monks will beat you with sticks until the demons inside you leave. Thankfully she got me the medication.

Adderall and Ritalin both require a prescription in Thailand as they are class substances which are commonly called "poor mans cocaine" on the street. A prescription from the USA will not work as Thailand does not use the DEA system/ DEA number assigned to doctors in the USA. Some less reputable pharmacies may sell these medications however the quality may not be so good i.e. a lot of knockoffs that actually don't work. Lamitor is available in general without a prescription simply because you can't get off on it nor would you want to take it unless you actually needed it. In any event if your friend would bring prescriptions from the USA I would be happy to destroy them and replace them with Thai prescriptions providing the DEA numbers check out and can be confirmed to be from a legitimate source in the USA ( I can check on the internet in less than 1 minute). I would be happy to do it for her free of charge.

That sounds great Jungian. I will pass this information on to her. Would you able to do this in Oct.?

I forgot to mention but you probably know a doctor in the USA can write a prescription for 90 days and it is possible in some states to write it for as long as 120 days with the proper travel documents showing you are leaving the country.
