Which Professions Are Best Paid For Thais?

Recommended Posts

Thank you Cat5; that was an interesting read and exactly what I was looking for.

You're welcome. If you find any information about other professions - such as doctors, dentists, and scientists - I'd be interested to see that, too. I'm not planning to change career - I'm just curious to know.

Be a social escort manager in a high classy venue. Earn 500,000 Baht per month including commissions, tips etc. Get to know all mega rich & powerful clients, lawyers, pilots, politicians, capitalists, gangsters, police chief too. :)

Sorry to keep posting the same reply to this and similar queries, but you should have a look at this:

I think it gives you all the information you need with the exception of jobs in medicine which I think you'll need to check too.

Thats a great read...a few weeks ago I was trying to dispel the common notion that most Thais in BKK earn 6k a month....I know from the company I work for and friends that the salaries stated on this document are correct, wish I had it a few weeks ago....just shows that Thais are not as poorly paid as most people tend to assume.....

Hi,

What advice would you give to a Thai teenager with an IB diploma about what to study at university to secure a well paying job in Thailand?

Politics or mass communication

I have known several Thai people who have graduated in mass communication - mostly from Ram university - and none of them have a decent job. I think it's often taken as an "easy" option instead of math or science.

Yes, I agree with you. There are plenty of Thai people earning decent wages in Bangkok. I'd like to see another report that gave average incomes of shop owners and road side vendors. Some of those guys selling BBQ pork seem to do better than the average English teacher working here. :)

Doctors at a top hospital can easily make 2-300,000 baht a month with the potential of a lot more. I have even heard of one who managed to get 1m baht in a month - not sure if that was a regular figure or not.

A doctor once told me that he earned 80,000 baht a month but he could have been being modest. The wealthiest non-business owning Thais I've met personally are high up in the police. The one I'm thinking of has four children at boarding school in the UK so he must be earning a fortune!

No different to any other country with the rider that the employment field should be "transportable" ( ie. able to be practised in another country with only a small bridging course if desired). If technically skilled then go for Dentistry related field. If not technically minded then go for medicine with a view to practising as a GP or a radiologist ( can always specialise along the way into a field of their liking)

Keep away from "wishy washy" studies that every man and his failed dog gets entry into like journalism, law, the arts, business studies ,teaching communication ect ect. Complete wate of time and the kid would be better to just get out in the business world and learn "on the street". If they are only able to get entry into one of these courses then in the long run would be much more profitable to have them study something in the technical skills area like aviation engineering or even a trade based course such as mechanics ( but must be apprenticed to a quality outfit like BMW or Mercedes ect ect).

Without being specific about professionals, English language skills for Thais will pretty much guarantee a better paid job than someone with the same basic qualifications but without the English skills. There was a survey last year (I think it was from Robert Walters) that suggested the benefits were on average about 50% more.

We have a small pharmacy near us. The lady owner is/was a doctor. She said that she couldn't make enough money as a doctor so she opened the drug store.

The funny thing in Thailand is other than the obvious things like medicine, law, engineering and so on the field of the degree doesn't seem to matter that much. For example I had a student graduate with a psychology degree he went to Bangkok where they offered him 25,000B per month to do clinical studies but he also applied for a job as a front office manager for a large company which hired him and is paying him 45,000B per month. I have seen this so often I'm beginning to think it actually doesn't matter, then again if you have a degree in art and are a native English speaker you just became an English professor....

Would you care to elaborate? Do you mean inadequate or incorrect? The listed salaries seem about right to me. For example,

Administrative Manager

Handle all administrative functions including office

management and general affairs, supervise

subordinates, formulate administrative policies. Be

responsible in sourcing and purchasing section.

Degree

5+ years experience

40,000 70,000

Maybe the truth is that working as a doctor she had to *work* for her money, whereas now she can just sit down all day serving just a handful of customers. Probably watches TV all day, too.

I used to know a girl who had just graduated in medicine. Because she had graduated from a government university, she had to work in a government hospital for a while (a couple of years or something like that - I'm not sure now) after which she said she she'd be able to get a job paying about 60,000 at a private hospital. I'm sure her pay would continue to rise as her experience increased.

It's true. You have to work for your money. Best way for a doctor in Thailand to earn big money is to openning her own clinic. That's probably true for most countries in the world too.

But to really make money in Thailand, after came back from a holiday last month, get into IT and be really entrepreneurial. But as Texpat mentioned, you had to be well connected. But not to worried, it's nothing that money can't fix. And if you did well, you might be the new Thaksin. :):D
