Getting Wisdom Teeth Removal In Thailand.. Good/bad Idea?

I'm considering whether I should get my wisdom teeth removed (4 of them, all impacted!) in Thailand in a hospital or dentist, from what I heard it is cheaper than getting it done where I'm currently at (Syd, Australia) which is over $2000 and waiting list. How much is it in Thailand and is it best recommended to get it removed there? (I'm going to Thailand in few weeks for about a month)

Many westerners combine a holiday with dental treatment. I think the general consensus is that the treatment and holiday usually cost the same as just the treatment in the West or Australia for that matter. The savings are huge.

The standard of dental care is every bit as good as that in any Western society in my experience.

I'm sure if this thread continues recommendations as to where to have wisdom teeth removed will appear thick and fast.

Had 2 removed in Pattaya, against my better judgement. But I was in pain and had no choice. Used a dentist recommended by my neighbour...he is located near Dusit Thani roundabout but I can't recall the clinic name. I even needed a root canal. All up approx THB10k. My conclusion: I was pleasantly surprised by the outcome. He was professional, explained everything to me in English, why he had to do this that and even apologised for the pain/discomfort (albeit slight, thanks to anaesthesia) at some stages of the procedure. And I was totally wrong to have expected the worse!

Yeah I want to get just the bottom 2 removed, thinking to do it first week while in Thailand. How long did it take for you to recover?

Good idea> there are some darn good Dentists around the Kindgom, just talk to friends and neighbors for a few directions. I for one would suggest having them pull in hosptial, they would be better able to handle any complications, at the very least a few hours stay in hosptial, max over night(?)

I was surprised that by the same evening, I could eat again. Directly after procedure, I even drove to the shops to do some grocery shopping (they only use local anaesthetic not GA). Although the appetite wasn't there and there was slight discomfort after the extraction. There was no intense pain, just mild discomfort thanks to prescribed painkillers, which I stopped taking altogether next day anyway. It did not stop me from doing things, going out, etc...although I voluntarily took a slower pace for maybe 3 days. But I think different peole may have different recovery times?

I have been to several Thai dentists and they always seem desperate to take my wisdom teeth out, so when i spoke to the UK dentist about 3 months ago he said unless theyre causing serious problems just to leave them as theyll settle down.

He was impressed by the Thai dental prices when i told him, he said for my filling etc i had in LOS for i forget but at a guess 7000bht it would have cost up to 3/4000GBP in England.

My niece had hers out at Bangkok Dental Hospital on Sukhumvit Soi 49 as an outpatient procedure under local anesthesia. I don't recall the cost but certainly less than it would be in the west.

Acute recovery (i.e. needing pain killers, ice pack and gauze packing in place for bleeding) = maybe 24 hours. Not able to chew anything on that side of the mouth = maybe a week or so.

Will indeed not want to do all at once. Possibly could do 2 on the same side at once, but not both sides of the mouth as you'd be seriously unable to eat or talk much otherwise.

Both cost and risks higher if general anesthesia used. However feasibility of doing it only under local may vary with the specific patient, how deeply impacted etc etc. if a dental surgeon tells you it needs a general, I'd tend to believe him.

had mine taken out here, its fine mate. had mine done at phyathai hospital in sriracha which about 20 - 30 minutes drive from pattaya towards bangkok. they have a dental section in there and were very good made alot easier by the dentist being absolutely gorgeous. from memory was around 3 or 4000 baht for 2 teeth and something like 10-15000 to be put asleep for the procedure, i took the cheap option and it was fine.

I had intense pain a couple of weeks ago and went to Memorial hospital and they took xrays.a few jabs in my gum,and a bit sore,then the lady dentist pulled if out and i didnt know she had done it.A gauze pacvk and i drove home and was eating the same day.a couple of days mild pain but all in all a fantastic job and only 2,800 baht,worth every baht as i was in so much pain.

I have had impacted wisdom teeth removed. Normally they will do one side, then wait for 2 weeks before trying the other side. X-Rays will indicate whether it's so impacted that it will require an in-patient stay as a General Anaesthetic will be required. If you feel you can withstand the pain with the aid of local anaesthics, which I did, in which they had to cut open the gum, dig into the tooth with pincers and extract it.

Apart from the manhandling, both teeth were removed in 15-20 minutes. No pain whatsoever, I must say that when the anaesthetic wore off I thought I'd been kicked in the mouth by a horse and slept for 2 days. If you choose the local anaesthetic way, it can be done at any recomended Surgeries, get yourself pain killers from a Chemists. Most Hospitals do the General Anaesthetic Dental Operations, however, I'd advise recomendations and get a price, as they'll be after keeping you in as long as possible, pain killers will be expensive.

I wouldn't go anywhere else for dental treatment, Thailand is the place for the treatment you require at a good price.

I had my lower ones removed at different times, together with my ex-gf. She has also removed her upper ones years later at the same doctor.

We visited Dr. Dheera at Bumrungrad Dental Dept. He only works, if I remember correctly, on Wed and Sat. I am extremely satisfied about the whole procedure under his skilled hands. He explained everything, and was extremely accomodating to make both of us feel relaxed, as I and my gf were quite nervous. He put some redish gel on the meat, so you wouldn't feel the needle too much when injecting the anaesthetics. Also the anaesthetics worked perfectly and we had no complications at all. No swelling, no pain, no infections and nothing else. He gave us a brochure with exact recommendations for every day and offered us to come by on Sat if we had any problems. He gave us Augmentin 1 gm, twice a day, for a week as preventive Anti-Biotics and strong pain killers. He stitched the wound up and took out the stitches a week later.

A perfect and painless operation in my memory. If I remember correctly it was 6'000 baht for one tooth. But it also depends on how hard it is to take out, how much equipment/time they have to use, I assume.

hi i had 2 wisdom teeth removed, plus 4 gold crowns in BKK, it was a third of the cost of the treatment in Aussie. My dentist got his degree in aussie. The service, hygene and professionalism was far superior to that in Aussie. It was a fixed price, free consultation and the prices are on their web site. Overall, I was extremely happy and got a free holiday to boot.

I have used Silom Dental in Bangkok over the past six years. They are probably on the top end of the price range but I enjoy their "state of the art" capabilities. They have a website (http://www.silomdental.com) listing all their procedures and prices if you want to get an idea of costs.

I have also used the Yanhee Hospital Dental Clinic which is much cheaper and quite good but does not have first class surroundings that Silom Dental has. I had a broken tooth and Silom Dental recommended I have the removal done in the hospital due to possible pain and discomfort - Yanhee Hospital dentist said he would do it in the chair "no problem".

Most dentist in Thailand seem to have a great grasp of the need for instrument sterilization and usually have signs up to let you know. What is unusual to me is that it is a seperate charge in almost all cases.

I had 2 wisdom teeth removed at the same time back at the end of January, one from each side on my top jaw at the Dental Hospital on Sukhumvit 49 and would highly recommend them for excellent service. All in including pain killers and a follow up to remove the stitches they put in after the removal was 6,494 Baht. Hadn't visited a Dentist for close to 10 years but they had been irritating the sides of my mouth for a while. The dentist spoke excellent English throughout the procedure telling me what was going on and even gave me the teeth in a little bag to take home, gross but cool! A far and away better experience from my last off-putting procedure for a single filling in the UK that put me off dentists for this long!

It seems like the prices quoted here for wisdom tooth removal seem a bit high. Maybe these are Bangkok prices. I just had one tooth removed two days ago here in Chiang Mai. It was not impacted so the procedure was simple. The cost, 500 baht. No pain, no complications. I was eating less than 2 hours after the procedure. Very satisfied.

If they are impacted you may require hospitalisation but if not most places do it in the chair with a local.

the procedure is relatively straight forward and from my experience it was only a day or two of unpleasantness and i was fine but it does all depend on how difficult it is to extract the wisdom teeth as to which procedure you need to follow.

Just to add my experience. Had two wisdom teeth removed (two more to go in another two weeks) at the special clinic of Chula Dentist faculty. The professor himself took care of my case, joked around and removed them before i noticed. 15 minutes work for two, 1500 baht for the whole procedure, including the 50 baht for the strong painkillers.

Partner had the same procedure at the International Dentist Bangkok (Ratchada) and paid about 4000 baht.

Chula is excellent, did not have to wait long.

each case is different and i'm not sure what "impacted" means. mine were all still completely embedded in the jawbones and cysts formed around them dissolving the bone. my dentist phoned around to find a surgeon in Thailand but whoever he contacted refused to accept after looking at the x-rays. had surgery in january 2007 performed in Singapore under full anesthesia, lasting 5½ hours, cost including 4 days in a top hospital ~12,000 US-Dollars.

Those couldn't have been wisdom teeth that he removed, could they? If they were, that's the easiest wisdom tooth extraction I've ever heard of. Usually those get more complicated as a person gets older and complications develop, and even when you yank them at a young age in an uncomplicated case you can expect that the patient is going to have their face swollen up like a chipmunk for a week after the extraction. Any quack can yank out otherwise savable teeth without causing a patient much, if any, pain - most likely that's what happened to you in Buriram. A good dentist is not one who extracts teeth without pain, rather it is a dentist who saves the teeth.

He also went back for a root canal later, and some more fillings, polishes etc. The whole thing came to about 18,000Baht after 2 months of dental work ($720 aussie), 2 impacted wisdom teeth removed, root canal and maybe 4 fillings.

We didn't shop around at all for price, I just wanted him to get it fixed. He thought it was riduculously expensive, I couldn't believe how great they were and how much cheaper than Aus it was.

I also had a checkup (500B - au$20), scale and clean (1200B - au$48) and filling (1000B - au$40) myself. They did a great job on both of us, and specialised in treating divers (half their clientelle), and we had no probs diving after (air bubbles that my man was paranoid about would have been nasty).

If I was in Aus and needed major dental things I'd consider flying to Thailand for it as great facilities and service and lovelly place to recuperate.

Wow, sounds really cheap than here. Here I'll be going with Private Health care (plus 3 months wait so I could get rebate from it) and pay $2000 for the removal of 4 impacted wisdom teeth. 2 of my wisdom teeth seems impacted but not too impacted, the other somehow lies on top of my back teeth which is really difficult to remove from the x-ray results I have seen and also quite hard to explain, (think as brick layers, one on top of the other? lol) which I know will require myself going to the hospital to have it removed.

This forum is helpful for me as it was for my trip to Thailand last year when I needed help a bit lol.

The ease or difficulty of extracting wisdom teeth varies greatly from patient to patient. For some it requires fairly major surgery and is done in a hospital under full anesethia by a dental surgeon. For others it is much less of an ordeal than that, and I'd expect that the cost of the procedure would be correspondingly lower in those cases.

Go for it mate.

The cost will amaze you, here in Brisbane i was quoted $A4000 for top and bottom plates to fill gaps. I went to BANGKOK SMILE , Sukumvit, and got the same job done for $A800 !

The service was second to none and dentists were trained in UK,USA and Australia. The staff were so friendly and helpful

and the surgery was up there amongst anything i have seen here.

I was able to contact them on the internet and got an immediate reply.

I would recommend them to anybody................................................ Now i am "all smiles" again.

Hi I have had all 4 wisdom teeth removed recently. I had them removed in 2 seperate visits. the cost was 1500 to remove each lower tooth and 700 to remove each upper. Unfortunatly for you the lower ones are difficult to extract and it would be impossible to remove these at the same time I think. You wouldnt be able to eat at all afterwards.

I use Bangkok dental clinic in sukhumvit 105 (soi Lassan) the staff are friendly and helpfull and the prices are reasonable. A word of advice try and get hold of some decnt pain killers as the dentist is not allowed to issue strong medication. It took 4 days for the pain to subside on 1 side and around a week the other.
