My german shepherd has killed a dozen or so cobras in the past 10-12 years and never been bit. Maybe hes getting slow in his old age but anyway he got bit the other day. I saw it and it was a quick bite and I wasnt sure if it bit him or not, then I saw some blood and knew he got bit.

I watched him for several hours and he seemed ok. The next day is face was swollen at the bite and he wouldnt eat for 2 days. Now hes back to normal.

I would like to know what I should do if he ever gets a serious cobra bite? This snake was only about 4 feet long and it looked like the bite was just a nip.

Ive been through the whole deal when he gets venom spit in his eyes. A little kha juice in the eyes does the trick.

Good dog. I hope we see some knowledgeable replies. My understanding is with variations of snake species, dogs may have some immunity or at least different levels of reaction to snake bite from humans.

My neighbor's dog died from a cobra bite and the hospital would not sell him the anti-venin for his dog. They told him it was for people and if they gave it to his dog and then a person needed it and there were none there would be serious problems.

Best to stop your dog from fighting snakes now, before it kills him

vets should have the anti serum.

one of my dog was killed by a cobra bite after she had killed several before without getting bitten.

another one was bitten when i was around. could not see the bite but a drop of blood on the cheek. after an hour the face swoll up and the dog got weaker and saliver dripping. an hour later when arrived at the vet the dog could not stand on his legs anymore or hold his head up. they gave three bottles of antiserum and lots of other injections and iv fluids. he finally pulled through but it was very close...

it depends on the amount of poison, on the area where the bite is, the size of the dog etc. if bitten go immediately to the vet and have antiserum etc injected. the poison is very nasty, can sometimes show obvious symptoms only after many hours, can do big damage then or even death. if bitten on paws/limbs tie a rope or anything tightly above the bite and take dog to vet. if bitten elsewhere clean the area thoroughly, avoid to touch with bare hands, even the tiniest amount can do harm. prevent other dogs from licking the affected dog.

I had one of my dogs die via a snake bite, then the very next day I heard a commotion and come over to see another one of my dogs with a baby cobra in his mouth.  Turns  out the baby bit him and I saw blood coming out from his mouth from the two fangs entering his face.  Took him to the vet and he was delivered anti venom and then the kept him overnight.

It's tough when you have hunting dogs and you try to keep them from doing what they have been bred to do.

Some of your stories are encouraging...

My golden retriever Luna got bit a baby cobra (sausage-size; about 2 feet long). She was fine for like 20-30 minutes and then I noticed she was lying down very still. She peed and then started foaming at mouth and convulsing a bit. Rushed her to the vet, and they didn't even have antivenin! They ran out... had to rush out to a nearby hospital to buy some! Luna is now in the ICU at the vet, and it doesn't look hopeful. The vet says to wait past a day... Luna is in shock and needs help breathing. What's disconcerting is she got bit on the lip, closer to her brain.

My other dogs are snake killers... with experience (Luna's only 10 months and very friendly). But a lot of times they're just normal snakes. Maybe they'd killed a cobra before, but I wouldn't know. The other dogs all seem fine, but I'm worried that they might have been bitten too. There are no symptoms, but I know the effect of a snake bite is dependant on location of bite and size of dog as well. It's 4-5 later; are my other dogs okay? They're still fine, but I'm just paranoid.

Would sure appreciate someone's advice and hear other dog owners' dog-snake-bite stories...
