Remote Application Access.

Featured Replies

Hi,

I'm looking for some software that will allow remote access to a program/programs loaded on a windows machine. I don't want any server side data to be distributed to the client, just a RDP type connection locked to specified applications that are already running on the server.

Any suggestions on good software able of doing this better than microsofts terminal services?

Thanks

Take a look at RAdmin (http://www.radmin.com).

I use that program for years and it's the best I had ever used for remote connection and administration. Unfortunate that program isn't freeware and cost US$ 49.00

Cheers.

http://www.logmein.com there is a free version

From my point of view using a web based VNC/Remote Control application is maybe ok as long as you use non-confidential data.

For to use with confidential data, I would never use an web based application for remote control, just for to be on the safe site.

Just my 2 Satang's!

Cheers.

Do either of those offer a remoteapp type interface?

Do either of those offer a remoteapp type interface?

Just go to http://www.radmin.com and download a full 30 days version for to test.

Logmein is web based and totally unsecure!

Cheers.

I like to use remote desktop over a Hamachi VPN for security. I have my firewall set up so that remote desktop app is *only* able to connect via the VPN. Works very well, easy to set up.

I just run openVPN servers on wrt54GLs - VPN to the server , get given an IP on the LAN then VNC to the box requiring attention

Any reason in particular you are avoiding Terminal Services? I really prefer it over VNC because it doesn't interfere with anyone using the host machine and dynamically resizes to match the resolution of the client. RDP can be made quite secure by changing a few settings. On the host machine you wish to control, go into the group policy editor (gpedit.msc) and change the security settings so it requires high security (128 bit encryption).

I would recommend you use a different external port number than the standard 3389, use another port and forward that to 3389 on the target machine. You can change the port used by RDP if you prefer by change a registry entry on the host machine:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Terminal Server\WinStations\RDP-Tcp\PortNumber

The most secure way is what Stumonster and Crushdepth recommended, do it over a VPN.

I'm trying to avoid Terminal services on server 2k8 as it requires CALs etc, which is a bit of a pain...Thanks for the heads up about RDP encryption though, I didn't realise that.

If it's application(s) you'd like to remote control or share, and not the whole desktop, try Citrix.

Never installed the server myself so couldn't advise you how complicated it is, but client side it's relatively simple; applications are launched by browsing to a page hosted on the server where the applications are and clicking on the application required.
