Exporting Buddhas.......

Featured Replies

My Thai wife is wanting to take some of her own Buddhas to the UK, and the big question is..... will she need an export license for them?

I guess I will have to phone the Office of National Museums in Bangkok to find out the answer. I just thought somebody on here might have been able to answer.

Please post your flight details and I will ensure you have help at the airport from customs to steal the Country's religious artefacts - :)

If your wife is a Buddhist she will not have any trouble taking out a Buddha statue through the airport. No need for a license, unless it is a priceless museum piece.

Every Buddha statue is not a religious artifact, and if you actually read what the original poster wrote, his THAI wife wanted to take her personal Buddhas out of the country legally.

In year 2007, in a small ceremony at Phuket International Airport, Airport Customs officials handed over to the local Museum around 100 Buddha images seized from departing tourists over the past year.

Most of the images were seized from tourists who bought them from shops unaware that they needed permission from the Fine Arts Department to take them out of the country.

Check first as per 'PoorSucker' good post. Thai or tourists are on equal par on this in the eyes of the LAW. :)

Good Luck :D
