Maybe is because i am a newbie, but am i the only guy that is bored to read messages to this forum written in english slang, incomprehensible abbreviations, nicknames of places etc.??

in example (but there are many) i recently read about an australian saying that he lives near "Brissie". Since i am a traveller i presume he is speaking of Brisbane, which, as far as i know, is not the centre of the world...

Maybe this forum is only for english mother tongue...and why moderators don't say anything about it?

Have you ever tried to talk to a thai in your local slang? I have and no one understands. There is no one where i live that speaks the same as me, but there are plenty in here. Should we all forget our heritage and speak a generic version of english? I think not.

I would guess germans care about germans, french about french, everyone cares more about the groups they feel they belong to.

Really?? This is what learnt reading this forum?

Never see a single topic about a nationality, but only general matters that include people of all nationalities. We live in the same country as expats and all have the same problem and questions. I am italian and i don't want to belong to any "group", if not that of the expats. anyway. Can i know which group you "belong" to?

people can use the slang where ever they come from? So if some one comes from Ireland or Scottland you think people who come from other countries (where ever) can under stand that? Talk fricken english

If someone wishes to talk using there own slang and you can't read it does that give you the right to make them speak differently. If i was reading a post where americans were choosing to use their slang, i would not complain, i would just stop reading. Is that too difficult. If i was writing something using my version of English slang and you could not understand it then perhaps you should consider that the topic was not meant to flow in your direction.

If i was talking about geophysics, (my degree and favourite topic), i would use many terms that were not understandable to laymen, those that wished to understand should educate themselves rather than expect me to reword everything so everyone could understand.

As for "talk fricken english", fricken is not an English word. it's probably slang from your local area.

I see it as a part of my education.

Try to look at it as a positive, like an opportunity to learn things about different cultures.

The Aussies can really lose me at times, in which case I politely ask and it will be translated.

Although I do sympathise if it is so bad that it becomes unillegable to you.

One should always understand where the language comes from.

Firstly the English lived on an island so there was a lot of inbreeding this resulting in a lot of mental disorders and speech imperatives.

After a while the English send the worst of them to Australia (criminals) so what can you expect with those genes. Not writers and poets i presume.

Also the poorest of them and most aggressive and adventurous went to the US... look what that got us.

I think we would have all been better off if those frigging English did breed like rabbits and stayed on their lil island.

But anyway its done now so nothing for us to do but to accept it.

Im lucky that i understand most of what is written on this board but I understand that not everyone is as skilled in English as a second language as I am. I also understand its hard to ask people to write down understandable English. Just see it as an excursion into the outback without leaving Thailand.

nidge, what I believe the poster is saying is that, why would anyone really want to speak slang, does it say anything about that person?, after all Australians are the biggest exponents of slang I've ever heard, your statement about your favourite topic and if others wish to understand your technical terms they should educate themselves, would seem to me to limit somewhat your chance of discourse with others as it's a somewhat specialised subject.

Wow, didnt realise a fellow Aussie referring to Brissy would cause such a stir for some. Personally I call it Brisvagus.
