Materialistic?

Featured Replies

An advertising agency surveyed 400 Thai women aged between 15 and 35 years in Bangkok, Chiang Rai, Ratchaburi, Ubon Ratchathani, Lop Buri and Hat Yai. Respondents were asked questions related to their values, dreams and the opposite sex.

When asked what they most wished for, 31% of the respondents said they wanted a car, 26% said money, 23% mentioned homes, 9% said mobile phones, 8% wanted stable jobs, 7% wanted higher education.

Only 3% said they wanted a male companion

Perhaps it goes without saying that they'll need a male companion in order to acquire all the rest of the junk.

:o

Snoophound.............don't think you need a survey to tell you that, it is so OBVIOUS!!! Just open your eyes and look around. Duh! :o

Spot on mate! Spot ON!!!!!!!

50 year old ugly fat farang with a slim 25 year old. You think it is love for him???? It is for what is in his bank account or pocket or what he can do for her (house/car/cell phones).

In the past a man in Thailand could get a divorce from a Thai woman very easily. Or alternatively he could simply walk away from his family (including kids) with no intention of ever paying a single Baht for their support. This happened to my Thai girlfriend whose husband (although Thai) had an Australian passport. He just skipped and left for Oz leaving her with 3 young children to support. He never returned.

Although things have changed somewhat now, many Thai women know what it was like and feel insecure in their relationship just for the reason I mentioned. Is that being "materialistic" or "cautious"?

IMA-Farang, if it can happen with a Thai man it can happen with anyone. Although I find it hard to believe that a man would abandon his own flesh and blood (were they his children or her children from another man?) :D

My view is that if you cannot trust the man, don't be with him. Relationships should be based on trust and not how much I can get out of it. If they want the man for the money, that's their business but do not attempt to have children to try to tie the man down. It is always the children that suffer in the end, not the adults. :D

I do agree that most Thai women feel very insecure in a relationship irregardless of education. :o

ok, that's a total of 107%, but let's not be too picky!

89% want money (31-car, 26-money, 23-home, 9-phone) - surprise, surprise!! :D

15% are clever : 8-stable jobs, 7-higher education - excellent percentage, I would say! :D

and 3% are honest!! :o

My hubby was with his ex for 7 years (Thai Girl) and he told me so many stories of how purely materialistic she was, ie

If they went to the mall together and she had 10,000 Baht on her and he'd only bought 2000 she would scream and yell at him then storm off. :o

One time he bought her a small ring for her birthday,( it cost 8000 Baht) She told him she wouldn't wear it as it looked too cheap. :D

The first car he ever bought was a Nissan, she told him she was gonna leave him unless he got a Mercedes :D

Bare in mine my hubby was only about 17 at the time!

There were so many stories like this, thing is they're still friends and I've even met her, and she seems like the sweetest most politest girl, I'd never have guessed she was capable of the screaming fits tantrums I've heard about if I hadn't been told!

Lets not be sexist here, I have heard of plenty of Thai women leaving their kids to fend for themselves. my friend was instructed by her mother not to call her mother any more just Aunt as she had remarried and cleared off with her new man leaving her to look after her two younger brothers

ahh rav

do i sense a new wife coming on?

How does she keep you in check with all those sexies in the casino?

Hold your horses JoJo... I am 60, not fat or ugly and I can still get young Thai women or young European women, or young American women... and I am far from rich. My wife (Thai) has her own money and her family are far better off than I am, or am likely to be.

And just for the record: There was a survey done in the USA... Two good looking male models were on display. Women had to choose which one was the most attractive. One wore an ordinary watch and the other wore a Gold Rolex. Then they would swap watches for the next lot of ladies. Every time, the women chose the man wearing the Gold Rolex. That tell us anything about American women? Sure it does... and I would bet a large sum of money that the survey would have the same end results in ANY country. :D:o

So, before you go judging others... wonder why your woman is with you?

Come to think of it, I'm 55, she's 30....

Quick, I better go ask her if it's me or the money. :o

do you know the difference between a slim 25yr old going with "50yr old ugly fat farang" - and with "25yr handsome farang" :

with the young one she goes, let (and help) him finish his qui**ie before he returns to his beer :D

with the old one she is having fun, :D because he has enough experience and time, and yes, it is not love at first sight, but with him, she has a chance to stay, whereas the young one will look for the next! :o

of course, it's always for money, or do you think, you are soooo gooood, and sooooo handsome, and that's why she goes with you?????? :D:D

99% don't do it for fun, but there are not many alternatives to survive!

Why don't you TRY not taking everything said on Thaivisa to heart and so personally Ravisher?? If you are happy as you are, why should you let anyone wind you up??

I wasn't talking about YOU in particular, I do not know you, so lighten up and get off your high horse. I wasn't the one who started with a thread about how materialistic a Thai woman is. SO, pls refrain from shooting people who reply to a thread, we are entitled to our opinions and we do not make others agree with us. I did'nt make that "survey" either. So, if you need someone to bash, try the one who started this thread or the one who made the survey.

So, before you go judging others... wonder why your woman is with you?

Who said I was a man? You talk about ME making assumptions?? You judge very easily too. It is called HUMAN nature, whether you want to admit it or not.

I think they should conduct a survey on how materialistic men can be too.......which cars they prefer, BMW, Mercedes, Porsche etc. Some men are materialistic too.

Ooops! I thought this was supposed to be a fun thread?!? Can we lighten up a bit?

:o

From Ravisher's post - wonder why your woman is with you?

I was making a general statement and this member (above) became personal. Read the thread. :D

Admin/Moderators, I thought we were NOT suppose to get personal on this forum..........isn't that personal enough? I do not go around insulting an individual personally. Maybe TV should allow ADULTS in here and not "schoolkids insults"? :D

If I am not wrong, one of the rules was not to insult an individual (member or moderator) directly or personally. :o

What do you think? Fairness please.

P/S mgnewman, it would be fun if others do not take things posted too personally.

Fair enough comment Rav...

Too many times I read on this Forum about Thai's being money-hungry. :D

And guys.... jai yen yen huh? :D

Taoism: shit happens

Buddhism: if shit happens, it isn't really shit

Islam: if shit happens, it is the will of Allah

Catholicism: if shit happens, you deserve it

Judaism: why does this shit always happen to us?

Atheism: I don't believe this shit

So typical of a man to say when he insults it is a question and when the woman asks a question it is an insult! :D

If you understand English (being an English man) I was generalising, not being personally insulting. I do not stoop SO LOW to ask why your 5th or 6th wife is with you do I?

Or shall I ask the question of why you have been divorced 5-6 times? Oh then again, you would consider it an insult as it came from a woman, bloody typical!

That is not a 'personal attack' it is a meer question?

:D

Needless to say, I have nothing to say to a man who cannot admit he was personally insulting. Post what you like, I am sure you will enjoy it.......thoroughly. :o

It is ALL a Trade Off.  'Love' is just a word we use for that trade off, when chemicals fuse in the brain and cause a 'feeling' of love... and it can last an hour, a week, months or years... or a lifetime. But it is still a Trade Off.  :D

Some people might like to use the term "compromise". :o

Hope no one is silly enough to extrapolate that all Thai women are materialistic from a sample of 400. :o:D

Regardless of race, ethnicity or gender, usually socioeconomic status plays a part in ones values, dreams and the opposite sex. :D

Hope no one is silly enough to extrapolate that all Thai women are materialistic from a sample of 400. :D  :D

I guess I'm silly enough to extrapolate that ALL women are materialistic! :o

Silly me! :D

And just before someone accuses me of 'woman bashing", I guess I'd better say that some men are materialistic too. :D

Try most. Don't you know that old phrase, "boys and their toys"??? I believe materialism, or to put it another way, wanting to better one's lot in life, is human nature. Not female, not male, just people. And by saying that ALL women are materialistic and only SOME men are is just that, woman bashing.

I have to say that I am not really thrilled with the tone of the last few threads/recent posters on the Ladies forum. Seems we are wandering away from women's issues and heading for men's issues with women. :D
