Government ready to promote Thai silk in world market, says PM

BANGKOK: -- Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva on Tuesday said that his government is ready to promote the positioning of Thai silks in the global market.

Presiding over a Thai silk fashion show held by the Commerce Ministry as part of “Thai Silk Road to the World” project, he said the government is willing to give the distinctive national product a boost to expand the country’s trade, investment and export sectors.

“Thai silk has a distinguished (reputation),” the prime minister said. “It can be used effectively in many kinds of applications. Entrepreneurs are able to build on the recognition factor of Thai silk to increase its value.”

Mr. Abhisit advised the fashion and garments sector that “It is wise to make use of (Thailand’s distinctive) intellectual property for commercial purposes and to boost the economy in a constructive way.

Creative designs and uses of Thai silk are “a key base for the national development,” the prime minister suggested.

An elegant Thai silk fashion show took place Tuesday graced by the ambassadors from 15 countries and their spouses as honorary models, an unusually distinction procession to grace the events parade of fashion..

The fashion extravaganza is part of the Thai Silk Exhibition, which is being held until May 31.

this is a Thai product that is long over due to be promoted... Thai silk is well known in most of the world, expecially in the U.S., but it's been a very long time since any kind of product promotion has been attempted... I wish the Thai Govt. good luck in their endeavors... :)

Don't you think the PM could have at least worn a silk shirt (like the traditional formal shirts worn by some of the other Thai gentlemen in the pics)?

Anybody know where the exhibition is being held?

I have a small private company, apart from my regular job, where I export silk scarves from Thailand to the US, Canada, Mexico, Israel, and the UK.    The middle to high end silk, such as ikat-woven scarves, are quite popular.  But the inexpensive one-color scarves are becoming less and less available.  The costsa re up and the quality is down.  Due to some government regulations of which I am still not too clear, most of these one-color scarves (R3 silk) actually come from bolts made in Vietnam and Laos.  The quality is very poor, and the silk is often marked with blue ink.  Where there used to be 6 or 7 vendors at any US gift show, now there is one if any.
