Need advise on Puppy golden retriever bought one for my GF 2 weeks ago he is

10 weeks old. Advise on what to feed him what jabs to get him

She dotes over him .She wanted a big teddy bear but we talked about a dog and well the rest is history. All she says is he is so pretty, she knows he will get big.

He is quite cute.

hi

buy a sack of quality dry food for large puppies, soak in water before you give it to your puppy, it should be soft. throw leftovers away after 3 hours. buy some canned dog food. give him some cooked chicken, fish, pork or beef if you want. rawhide bones are good for chewing and playing, also you could try big pork or beef bones (raw) to keep you puppy busy. some leftovers from your food will make his diet complete!

for jabs etc ask your vet, I would recommend you introduce your puppy to the vet soon, at this age some jabs and also deworming are very important.

good luck :o

I would be careful about chicken or fish due to bones. My grandfather's pointer choked to death on a chicken bone. Also rawhide is now considered potentially dangerous in this regard as well as meat bones being splinter-prone.Pig ears and Nylabones are supposedly safer.A good commercial dog food is safest.

I have been feeding my dogs beef bones for over 30 years and never had one problem with them. Chicken bones on the other hand splinter and get stuck in the dogs throat. I would not recommend chicken bones.

Very true.

My wife is away and I have to feed the dogs. Yesterday I gave the big one a fresh "Phad Thai", turned his nose up at it.

I hear people saying Thai dogs can eat anything, chicken bones included.

I find this to be true, but not always pleasant for the dogs getting the bones stuck in their throat. Yes, they will eat the bones, but feel a bit of discomfort sometimes.

I don't think they will die, and had never heard of one dyinnny unntil this thread.

Good or bad giving chicken bones?

If you have an alternative, good.

Does your dog eat Phad Thai?

the "BARF" diet is used by many top breeders, it also includes chicken bones, got to admit i dont give my dogs chicken bones though..

the BARF diet is bones and raw food:

raw chicken bones are ok cooked are not .... but thai dogs and our canaan dogs dont seemt to have these problems, goldens might(canaans and the basic village dog types have a long pointy nose and eat differently then the more 'shaped' pure breds.);

but with the chicken flu thing, might hold back on this, beef pork etc raw or cooked are great (our dogs love a calf head to play with, especially the jaw)

rice, whatever..... whatever it gets used to eating, you can feed it, but if a 'fancy' pure bred and not the village dog type, might want to stick with dry/canned puppy chow two times a day until a few more months old than one time a day.

doesnt have to be wet if puppy chow, and dry is better for teeth

shots are whatever is required in thailand , probably distemper parvovirus parainfluenza, leptospirosis and some others ; rabies when reaches proper age; worming : give one pill and then 10 days later an other to complete treatment,

good luck,

Bina is absolutely right about the jabs, distemper is prevalent as is parvovirus and rabies. Make sure you get them as soon as the vet allows, puppies who get distemper die rather quickly if it isn't caught in time.

As for chicken bones, well I agree "thai dogs" can eat them generally with no problem but a friend of mine had a fila brasilero (kinda like a great dane) that died when he ate a chicken bone and it tore open his trachea. So, although my (thai) dogs have eaten chicken bones in the past, after watching that poor dog slowly die, I no longer give them bones. I feed my dogs a mix of rice (aids digestion) dry dog food and leftover cooked chicken, fish, beef or pork and some cooked veggies. No curries, no pat thais. Potato and bread are also bad for dogs digestion. And, as you can see from my dog photos album, all my dogs look great! (first 6 animals are mine, the rest are elfe's i believe)
