NZ Embassy Bangkok warn about forged visa stamps

From NZ Embassy's website:

Forged Thai Visa Stamps

Monday, 22/9/03

It has come to the Embassy's attention that many NZers are using the services of visa agents to obtain a "visa extension". This is illegal* as it is not a visa extension which is obtained, but a new entry stamp into Thailand. The Thai authorities are taking a hard line and a number of foreign nationals (including NZers) have recently been arrested and charged with document forgery as the Thai entry stamp has been found to be forged.

Document forgery can carry a prison sentence and after serving any prison sentence you are likely to be deported from Thailand and you could also be blacklisted.

The Embassy strongly advises all NZers to be extremely wary of the claims of these visa agents that what they are doing is legal. If you require a new entry stamp in your passport you must pass through the Immigration Checkpoint in person, it is illegal for someone else to do this on your behalf. If you are in doubt you should check with the local Thai Immigration Bureau Office or the New Zealand Embassy in Bangkok.

*There is a difference between these visa agents and legitimate companies who assist in preparing the paperwork for a visa extension for a work visa.
