Not being critical of the OP but he took a big risk for the Thai girl adn she barely acknowledges him? Remember, the Thai guy can make one phone call and have 5 or 10 buddies there. If it had gotten physical and the OP serioursly hurt the Thai guy, who do you think will go to jail? Do you think the Thai girl will help you get out of jail?

Don't get me wrong, I do admire the guy for adhering to his beliefs but be prepared to accept some unpleasant consequences if it goes wrong. Just my take on things...

In that situation - outside a busy mall - I would of walked past.

Its not a good idea to get involved in a boy and girl fight wherever you are. If someone ( male or female) is being beaten to a pulp by a (male or female) I will try and step in. But if its a case of just a slap between two people you have to consider the possibility that they might have deserved it. In a perfect world nobody would ever hit anybody else - but we don't live in a perfect world.

Well I would like to add that all those who are saying they would have stood up to him and possibly given him a knock around are just stupid, I am sorry but not everything has to lead to fistycuffs and most certainly not in this situation, okay yeah if a girl is being gang raped then yeah but not for a single slap.

You could have always walked over there and asked them both is everything alright or to calm down and talk things out.

I am amazed that lots of posters on here actually think that what the OP did was the right thing to do. Although brave it most certainly was not the right thing to do and most things in life can always be talked out.

I stepped in once didn't use any violence simply shouted stop and stood in between the guy and girl that was being punched....

As I walked away the girl broke a bottle over my head the guy then punched me.

In future i will never step in between a rowing coupule if they are stupid enough to put up with each other up to them.

If im sure some one is being attacked and is asking for help that would be a different matter I would try and help.

Hahaha Welcome to Thailand my friend..Looks like you have learned the hard way. To interfere in a Thai quarrel is the same as showing disrespect to both of them. It makes them looks incompetent to solve their own personal problem.

Yesterday I was visiting the Computer Plaza in Chiang Mai.

Once I finished with my purchases, left the building and began walking towards my motorbike.

Then I noticed by the building entrance door, a young tall Thai guy age about 19 dressed in university uniform having a serious argument with a very short Thai girl who looked about the same age also dressed in university uniform.

Suddenly the guy gave the girl an almighty slap in the face. On seeing this I quickly walked over to the guy and stood next to him. He towered over me, but I looked up at him and stared straight into his eyes giving him the message that if he is considering beating on this girl again, he is going to have to deal with me first.

Than he took out his mobile phone, put it to his ear and slowly walked away, leaving the shocked girl standing with me outside the Plaza.

I watched him disappear around the corner, and then I got onto my motorbike and drove off. The girl hardly acknowledged me at all.

When I arrived home I explained to my wife what happened. She said it was a stupid thing to do because the guy could have had a knife.

But I don't care; feel that I done the right thing even if some may believe it's better to be a live coward than a dead hero.

What would you have done in that situation?

My friends and family all tell me that one day I will end up dead, but I just cannot let things like that happen when I am around. Glad you stepped in and good to know I am not the only " fool" Good job !!

Because the few man who do, halve self-respect. We know and have been teached, it's not tolerated to hit a woman, whatever she did. Woman should be respected, they do many things wrong, but in the end they will think it over, and change for the better one.

Well, you know now what to do next time - as the girl didn't even thank you - is to either help the guy slap her about and hope for some gratitude at least, or walk away.
