Accident Deputy Superintendent Dies After SUV Crashes Into Power Pole in Ubon Ratchathani
Pictures courtesy of Khaosod. Police Lieutenant Colonel Jeerarot Akkarapachueansakul, Deputy Superintendent (Investigation) at Mueang Ubon Ratchathani Police Station, was killed in a high-speed crash after he skidded his SUV off a curve and collided with a high-voltage power pole in Warin Chamrap District. The fatal crash occurred at approximately 21:45 on 1 July, on Niwas Withi Road, near the Chomchan Curve, a sharp bend descending from a bridge over the Mun River. Emergency responders, including rescue workers from the Sawang Bucha Dhamma Foundation and personnel from the Warin Chamrap Provincial Electricity Authority, were called to the scene. Upon arrival, officers found a severely damaged white Mitsubishi SUV with Lt. Col. Jeerarot trapped inside, down a roadside embankment. He was unresponsive, with heavy head and facial injuries, with no signs of life. Rescue workers spent over 20 minutes using hydraulic cutting equipment to extricate him from the wreckage. Despite efforts to resuscitate him at the scene, he was later pronounced dead at Sappasitthiprasong Hospital. A second vehicle, a grey Mazda pickup truck, sustained damage to the front right side and right wing mirror. Its driver, Mr Sompong, 49, told police that he was driving home to Thung Si Udom District from Trakan Phuet Phon when the SUV came speeding towards him, clipping his side mirror before ploughing into roadside metal barrier and launching into the power pole, which then snapped and collapsed across the road. High-voltage cables were left dangling dangerously, prompting electricity officials to cut power in the area temporarily. Preliminary investigations revealed that Lt. Col. Jeerarot had been working earlier that day but appeared fatigued and had requested to finish his duties from home. Police are investigating whether fatigue or a possible medical condition may have contributed to the crash. CCTV footage from the area is being reviewed to determine the exact cause of the crash. They do it in Thailand, mine used to be quite routine about it but these days it seems to be an occasional thing. No extra charge on the bill like the hospitals do thankfully! -
