Flags At Half Mast

Been doing a fair bit of traveling the last few days and noticed a lot of flags at government buildings are at half mast in several provinces around the country. Anybody else noticed this and know why? At first I thought it was the recent last few days of violence, but I started noticing before the monks were attacked in the south.
