Renewed Passport And Overstay

Featured Replies

Pardon me if this gets a bit long but this is a confusing tale. I guess if I skip the whys and just stick to the whats it will be much shorter.

I've been in Pattaya since Feb 2008. In that time I used 30 day Cambodia runs. then learned of 60/30 day Loas visas and finally the 180 day Laos visa.

In the middle of my last 180 visa my passport was nearing the within 6 months of expiration period.

We went to US embassy in Bangkok and renewed my passport.

Soon after it looked like I would be returning to the US and decided to neglect the new passport, skip the 30 day extention on the first half of the 180 day visa and go straight to the Cambodia part of the trip buying myself 60 days to finalize things here and return to the US.

Then things got rather crazy with my Thai wife, as only things can in Thailand, and I stuck around to make sure she was okay.

Well in that chaotic time I got confused about my next visa date, thinking it was July instead of June. I was going to correct it with a day to spare when I realized that the passport I was still holding was now 5 months from expiring.

So here are the questions:

1) Technically entering the US Embassy is leaving Thai soil. Will I be able to pick up my passport and get out of the building even though I am an overstay?

2) Is there somewhere in Bangkok that I can pay my overstay fine and get my final 30 day extension stamped on my new visa? If so, does any one have an idea what that (not the overstay fine) cost is?

3) If the answer to #2 is no, can I pay the fine at the airport and travel to another country?

Thank you for your time.

Well I am confused . You say you have a new passport your Visa is in your old passport and that you are about a month overstay. I think.

Go to the airport and leave. Paying the fine as you go. 500 Baht a day.

The new passport is still at the US Embassy in Bangkok (I assume) sitting there for the last three months or so.

I just want to make sure I won't have any trouble picking it up and getting back onto Thai soil with the overstay.

Good to know I can go straight to the Airport afterward assuming though.

Thanks again.

I do not understand why it is at the Embassy but never mind. You will have no problems picking it up . You should also have no problems at the airport. Just do not get caught by the police while on overstay.

Entering the US embassy may be US soil

but it does not count as a border for the Thais.

No one is going to check you for overstay at the embassy.

At the airport show the old passport and pay the overstay,

then you are home and dry.
