Will Anti Virus Software Protect W7 If Installed On Xp?

Recommended Posts

Excuse me for asking what is probably a stupid question.

My laptop has Windows XP installed with all the appropriate anti virus /skyware software etc.

I recently downloaded and installed Windows 7 RC, on the same machine.

Both OS work fine.

W7 has no anti virus software installed, as yet.

I was wondering if the anti virus software also scans the files etc on W7 when I run it to scan on XP? Presumably it does, as it scan the hard disks?

Also, I get no message on W7 warning me to install anti virus software.

Sorry if the answer to this is obvious - I don't really understand fully how these things work :)

Not only will it work but if you look in the security centre and it will recommend several antivirus programs.

Not sure if you understood my question.

I was asking that if I run the anti virus software on the XP op system, will it also scan the files on W7, or do I have to run it again on W7?

Anyway, I think I've answered my own question as the W7 security centre tells me that no antivirus software is present, so even if it has been scanned, I'm not taking any chances and will install all my software on W7 and run it on that system as well.

But what will protect the computer while you are using windows 7?

Well I did say it was a stupid question :)

Yes, you are quite right. So I have installed the anti virus software onto the W7 OS

Here's the rub - why use both - ya obviously skipped M$ Virus as it was lousy, so what makes ya think that W7/8/9 will be any better.

I would rather keep XP and load say MDV or PCLOS as my toy. Ya dont need any AV.

I can see a major AV disaster here - but again - why?!

Why bother with Xp when 98 still works?

Sorry, you've totally lost me! :)

My XP is virus free and always has been.

I'm playing with W7 RC on the same machine, and have now installed the same AV software that I have on XP

In fact last night I used the W7 easy file transfer tool to transfer my XPfiles onto W7, and the report on W7 gave me a nice bright tick for already having installed Avira AV software. :D

All is fine and good.

Why will there be a disaster? What did I do wrong?

Better still, lets go back to using the abacus. Much more reliable than Microsoft.

We could go back to msdos, only need cheap computers and less crashes, beat that cs.

Win7 is a fine operating system, if someone wants to run it alongside XP, why bother them with suggestions for Linux?

XP anti-virus will scan Win7 files, but it won't protect you when you are using Win7 itself.

There's a news of an anti-virus by Microsoft itself, should be available pretty soon, free of charge. I will definitely give it a go.

I bet you wont be able to download much porn on an abacus, nor log tables if your thinking of them, maybe a slide rule could be put to some use though

Thanks Plus.

I agree it is a very nice system - lovely features and easy to use. Some say it is like Vista, but I never tried Vista so I wouldn't know.

Clearly the Beta and RC versions and all the feedback will help enormously in making the most trouble free system yet when it is eventually rolled out.

I still might buy an abacus for back up though. :)

I'm running AVAST Home (freeware) on Win7.. Works great.

It's already been optimized for Win7, so no issues or problems at all.

CS

PS... I'm wondering if the new MS software will run concurrently with Avast. It not a good idea to run 2 AV softwares at the same time on the same system... A dual Boot sys should be OK. I wonder how many people will have problems D/L the MS stuff without removing the stuff they have now?

Or is this some new special configued software that will let you run 2?

I don't think I'll give up Avast so easily and quickly for the new MS AV... and I'm not an MS hater...

But why fix something that ain't broke?

I have one Win7 that rarely goes online, I will try MS AV on it first.

Avast is great, but I expect MS can make a less intrusive real time protection for its own OS - it knows where entry points could be better than any other AV maker.

I didn't mention it before because I thought it was obvious. I have a dual boot system for XP and W7.

BTW The easy file transfer programme is great (to transfer all you old files to W7) and the backup system is also very good.

I have always presumed that folks use a computer for business, and would want to lock it down.

I gather there are also those hobbyists around who like to play. Which is good - to each his own.

When ya purchase a Chevy V8 that runs perfectly, why install another engine in the trunk?

W7 is not hardened yet, might never be, much like its predecessor. XP is a good O/S - even the US military says so.

My spare engine of choice would be Linux - might even learn a thing or two also.

For anyone who is simply punching out a few emails, writing & browsing, a small footprint Linux is all ya need.

Its a 5 minute install & setup - no AV, no compromised CPU, no worries, mate. It will run on spit.

Once ya start moving files around is where all best are off - its like taking your thumbdrive to

the printer or publisher - it will get compromised - guaranteed. Email them.

BR>Jack

PS I doubt there is any h/w or s/w that runs 98 anymore, that I am aware of, so stay with the abacus - safer.

I appreciate your comments and suggestions, but just because i do not use my pc's for work or business, it doesn't mean that I don't have dozens of uses for them, some of them quite complex.

As it happens, I recently bought a new Acer Lap top to replace my old Dell Laptop, and found that I could not transfer the genuine copy of XP from Dell to Acer. So one of the learned computer guys on Thai Visa suggested I try W7 RC, rather than buy a new copy of XP.

So I did, but I also installed XP (pirate) onto the Acer, until I learned more about W7. I am enjoying the learning process - what is wrong with that? And what is more, I really like W7 and will certainly install it on all my machines in due course.

I can play with my Acer to my heart's content, as all my main stuff is on my Desk top PC, running with a genuine copy of XP.

Then I have another Desk top, also with genuine xp, which my wife and son use, and I do occasionally, for various reasons.

Is all that Ok by you or should I try Linux :D

Nothing wrong with learning - one of life's surprises.

Not sure of the State of Eula right now, but it was OK to make a copy, or download the ISO, then install it - with key, might not be Kosher on both machines, but so long as nobody is counting, who cares. Better than bogus. Maybe delete unwanted copy later. But it is all so boringly same/same, not different. As ya having fun, try Snow Leopard.

Its cheap too.

Two problems. 1st Snow Leopard's release date is not until September. 2nd, speaking of EULAs, Apple's specifically states that their OSX systems are only legally allowed on Apple branded computers.
