wrecker
In addition on the absolute insane comments in the Bangkokpost about the red short protestors who would damage the trourism of industry, the family members of Suthep who all seem to live around Phuket should point out to the same Tourism hot shots that from now on extortionist who raise prises in shops and taxis will be fine a staggering 200,000 baht and imprisoned for a year. THAT would set an example to the people who have so little decency by raising the prices.
bkk_mike
One downside, Americans are compulsary tippers, so no one should be surprised when workers at Phuket tourist venues get to expecting tips from all farang. It could get as bad as the States where, if you don't tip generously, you're treated like dirt by staff members - who feel genuinely jilted. Blame the labor laws. People who receive tips are exempt from the minimum wage. Some are paid as little as £2 / hr. No need to place blame anywhere, as these people make far more than a lacky on min wage. They understand that they are independent contractors, responsible for paying their own taxes and earning what they are worth in the eyes of the patrons they provide service to, having said this the social norm in the usa is 15% hence they have a measuring stick to assess their work via a monetary reward. imho if they were given a choice of working for a guarantee of 5 pounds per. hr. or working comission the good ones would all choose comission. hel_l that would be a good screening test for owners; offer waiters a choice of a 5 pound base or comission. I'de pick the ones who believed they would earn more on com. You can blame somewhere. The IRS. In the States, the tax man assumes that waiters/waitresses get 15% in tips and tax them accordingly, so if you don't tip in the US you are costing them money as they still have to pay the tax on the tip they didn't receive. The US tax office is probably the most insidious in the world. After all, what other country still taxes you even if you don't live there, even if you're not a US national. I know a Brit in HK who, because he has a green card, has still to pay US taxes.

ballpoint
The point of stealth is to obscure. If you can do that by appearing significantly smaller that you are, you can then move in much closer before being detected. This is SOP in the animal kingdom especially among insect predators. This can also stretch your opponents resources thinner, thinking they now must investigate EVERY small craft on radar. Well, it's not working. I can clearly see it in the pictures on the first page of this thread.

ParadiseLost
Benefiting greatly from the steady stream of crew members venturing onto Phuket island are numerous taxi and mini-van operators waiting dockside to take visitors to entertainment areas such as Patong. According to one of the crew members who spoke with the Gazette, taxi drivers are charging an extortionate 2,000 baht per trip – about 1,400 baht more than the price local expats would consider a reasonable fare. Perhaps the excess is not as dramatic as it appears - the usual fare would imply a single party, ie one or two passengers costing 600 baht for one or 300 baht each. If a group of sailors fill a car we could assume there would be four passengers, each paying 500 baht. In fact each sailor is given a discount of 100 baht for the discomfort of sharing. Texpat
I'm sure all the randy lil slappers plying the soiled streets of Patong will be more than grateful to earn their wage snoggin up with a fit and handsome sailor rather than a frumpy, bent-over soap-dodging geezer clutching his Boots Pharmacy plastic bag while milking his half-pint of Chang lite. A respite from hairy ears and flabby abdomens will most certainly be welcomed.
rogercw
"the massive 208-meter stealth ship the USS New Orleans amphibious transport vessel with just over 1,000 crew members, about 10% of whom are female officers. " Another error by the reporter. Officers do not make up ten percent of the crew, let alone female officers. He probably was told that ten percent of the crew was female. Possibly he was told that ten percent of the officers were female. Both possible in today's Navy. No way do female officers add up to ten percent of the entire crew. chiangdan
Or as the local Kathoeys would say, pass me another American seaman, this one's split! britainmal
When asked why Phuket was chosen as a port of call for all five ships, Mr Davies explained that Phuket was the destination of choice among crew members due to the island’s diverse options in entertainment. That sentiment was confirmed by other crew members who said that they always receive a warm welcome from the locals in Phuket. Yeah very diverse in entertainment options-bar hookers, massage hookers, freelancer hookers, bar brothels hookers, and regular brothels hookers. They also have three choices of people to have sex with-girls, lady boys, or men. The locals receive the sailors with a warm welcome beacuse they get to double their prices more than the usual ripe offs and they see dollars signs.
