i'm just about to submit an australian spouse visa application for my burmese fiancee. i've got a police clearance and id card (burmese), and i'm assuming they need to be translated into english for the application.

can anyone recommend a good burmese-english translation service?

or will my 37,000 baht pay for this service if i just submit the docs as is? i'm guessing no.

i'll try and submit the lot on monday then, and explain that we're waiting for the translations. if i do that, then i take it the cost will still be 37000 baht?

Submit a covering later with the application advising that you are still awaiting the translations and when you will expect them to be forthcoming. You just saved about THB8000.

The tough part may be getting the translation done by a company that can put their stamp on it.

You might try contacting the the companies on this list. The are all large operations so they might be a good place to start.

i've been emailing this company, who have quoted 2000 baht for a couple of emails and the id docs. but they asked for a bank transfer to start the process. i'd rather just go there and give them the docs, or be able to talk to the tranlsator myself. http://www.bkktranslation.com/index-en.php

That list is the only one that I know of that comes from an embassy. One of them may have somebody on staff or somebody they know of to do it. I think you could probably do it yourself but of course it would not have the stamp.

The one you gave the link for looks like it is is set up to work with businesses instead of individuals. I don't like it when websites have no address or phone numbers for a company or a business. Makes me suspicious.

yes, i was thinking of just doing it myself. and if they ask later, we can use someone they have on their books. do you think that would be ok?

that's also the same reason i don't want to use this interpreter.

i would feel better about going to an office, and even meeting the interpreter in person or on the phone. i keep phoning these places up (even the ones recommended in the us embassy pdf posted above) and most can't understand my english, and when they do they just say they can do it - no idea about certification, and no-one has given me the name or ph no of a single burmese interpreter yet.

we only need translation of two docs -

1) id card

2) police clearance

the id card will just confirm all the information which is printed on my gf's passport, a cert copy of which is being used for the app.

i know the police clearance is needed, and i can translate into english no problems but i'm not an accredited translator. we also have the thai police clearance written in english.

You may need to pay a visit to one of then on the list I gave you. I have used #5 and at the time they had good english speakers working there.

I think if you find one to work with you they might even do something with a draft translation you did.
