We just bought a land in Wiang Chai (Chainiwet Road). Coming from Chiangrai, we take on the right next to post office. It is very next to Wittayakhom school.

I want to get confirmation about internet quality in this area: speed, stabilty....

thank you for your replies

I wouldn't worry about it too much. I drive through WC on the way to CR and it seems like a nice little town and much more developed than where I live. Internet in Thailand is never perfect but you'll get by. If you are more than 2 km from the closest terminal, or whatever they call it, you may have to keep the speed down to 3 megs as I do. Tried 4 meg for awhile but just dropped out too often.

If you end up on TOT sometimes the problem is in Bangkok or Chiang Mai and related to weather or power outages that might not be obvious locally. Sometimes my ADSL hangs and the light on the router won't come on but a call to ask them to recycle my connection and things go back to normal.

So have you started to build yet?

Thanks for your answer Villagefarang.

No, we did not start to build yet. We are still in Europe and we plan to come definitively in quarter 1 2012.

The next major issue I have to work on is to find a local builder and an architect. If you have any idea about this, please advice me because searching on internet is not successful.

By the way, congrratulation for your blog. I visit it once a week at least

I live out of town and had the TOT Satelite installed. The connection was terrible , slow as hel_l at times and connection loss - frequently . I was paying about 2,400 bht for 24hr service per month. I had the engineers out 3 times , once to reposition the dish , not that it had moved since instalation . I still had problems after they left the first time . The 2nd time they came , they said a banana tree was blocking the signal - total Crap . The 3rd time they changed the Modem.

The service was hit and miss for the time Ihad it BUT guarenteed on Friday's from 5pm until Monday morning the service was dire. I have had it removed completely.

Being stuck without the internet I went to town looking for alternatives. What you can get now is a package from TOT and the other company ( forgot the name ) costing about 8,500 bht for a stick modem and connection .

If you live too far from town they will tell you, you cannot get the signal there. However , I was told this but knowing I have mobile phone connection where I live , I didnt believe them. I then tried to buy a stick modem from many different places , inc , all of the shops in Big C and none of them had one .

I got a friend to buy me the stick modem in BKK and post it to me , total price 2,000 bht . I then spoke with both 1-2-call and Dtac both offered the service over the phone . I took 1-2-call , stuck my sim card in the stick modem, paid 1000 bht at 7-11 to put on to my phone as a credit , and as 1-2-call already had my details (phone number ) I was then connected and the 1000 bht deducted from my mobile phone credits . You get a cd driver to load on to your pc that comes with the modem and all you do is follow the instructions. Connection since I have had this has been fantastic , the speed is very good and no loss of signal.

What you need to ask for when shopping is for an Edge USB Wireless Internet Device. I recommend that if there is no ADSL or anything from your village , this will be your best option.

Good luck.

Its not fast enough to down load movies , they do down load but it takes over 15 hours .

Normal usage sending recieving mail etc , internet web pages is fairly quick. Quicker than my satelite connection before .

It also depends on what USB device you buy , mine was 2k for the 3Gb but if you get the 4Gb the performance will be far

better but I dont know the cost.

I hope that helps.
