The meetings are actually on the 2nd and 4th Saturdays of every month at the Shangri-la at 10:30 am. All are welcome. The Chiang Mai Friends Group meets once a month. Both are good, informative and friendly organizations.

Many thanks all. Er... any clues as to where to find this place?

Will try the website but a clue would assist.

Again thanks.

It's one of the largest newer hotels in Chiang Mai. Just south of the night bizarre. Here is the link to the web site: http://www.shangri-la.com/en/property/chia...th/chispa/intro. Or try google - Shangri-la Chiang Mai.

Many thanks to all those that replied. Am a veteran but can't easily get to north, night bazzar easier but still a trek from Hang Dong. Will look at the site and see what gives.

Again thanks.

Hi All,

Fairly new arrivals in Chiang mai, need to know if there are any regular ex-pat gatherings/meetings/socials that might be held. Any know of such please?

Hi Dave,

See your fairly new to Thai Visa, do you realise there is a separate Chiang Mai forum ?

Best

Steve

Agreed; you should get plenty of help and info from the Chiang Mai section, from fellow veterans in particular, I'd imagine.

"Welcome you to Chiang Mai!" :)

Hi Steve,

Thanks and yes, the old brain wasn't working when I posted, the penny has now dropped with me.

Many thanks.

There is also a monthly VFW meeting held on each 1st Satuday of the month. Go to their website at http://www.vfw-chiangmai.org/ for more information

There are also informal monthly meetings of the Royal British Legion, first Wednesday of every month, 7.00pm, at the Olde Bell, Loi Kroh Road.

Nowadays you need not be a former serviceman and need not even be British to join. One of the main purposes of the Chiang Mai sub-branch is to preserve and run the annual Remembrance Day, November 11th, from 10.30am at the Foreign Cemetery. All are welcome to this non-denominational show of respect to all who have died in any war, anywhere in the world.

Another interesting group (if you like old cars) is Classic Cars of Lanna, which meets on the last Sunday of every month from 10.0am to noon at Nim City Daily, otherwise known as 'Rimping near the airport.' Owners and enthusiasts often do informal 'rural runs' from this start point.

So informal that it's often a really good laugh is the Tuesday folk music night at The Garden guest house and restaurant, Rachadamnoen Rd, about halfway down and almost next door to the Writers Club & Wine Bar. British, Irish, Australian folk (and some American ballads) with acoustic guitars, harmonica, banjo, penny whistle and a very talented flute player. The same place has blues on Sunday nights during the popular 'Walking Street' market. We are fortunate here in Chiang Mai. Something for everybody.

I agree Tuesday nights and especially Sunday nights at The Garden are great nights out, lots of fun and some great music. The entertainment starts at about 7:30 with traditional Thai (Issan) music with a jazz twist as Boonhugsa are joined by a sax player and a percussionist. At about 9 PM Warren Simpson plays some accoustic slide blues with 'Boy' a great Thai guitarist who later joins Deja Voodoo for electric Blues until about midnight.
