Govt tightens controls on food toxins

BANGKOK: -- The Ministry of Public Health has revised its regulations on the quantities of toxic residues from agricultural chemicals permissible in foodstuffs, bringing Thailand in line with international guidelines.

The new regulations, due to come into force next month, will supersede existing rules drawn up in 1995.

According to Prof. Phakdee Phothisiri, secretary-general of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the changes will ensure Thailand’s compliance with revised standards drawn up by the Codex Alimentarius international food standards body.

It also comes as a response to the Ministry of Agriculture’s banning of certain agricultural toxins, whether for import, export or possession.

The government has designated 2005 as ‘Food Safety Year’, and is unveiling a raft of measures designed to boost the confidence of domestic and foreign consumers.
