nakachalet
watch out for those fake us silver coins on displayed at many night markets. most if not all are fake silver dollar coins. most are duplicated and shipped overseas from china (sorry my chinese buddies). i was there a few years ago and they were sold by weight.... lol most of the authentic silver dollars in southeast asia are in collectors' safes, the more common ones can mostly be seen in their showcases. just be extra careful when buying the so-called rare coins, particularly the eagle coins. the appearance and weight of the fakes are quite similar to the genuine us eagle coins. the insurance premiums on these rare coins, even when in a protected display case, are quite high. the selling price of a silver eagle classified as minor blemishes in the us, 3 years ago, was in the neighborhood of 200+ usd per piece; whereas the premium category can hardly be seen nowadays. good luck to you

Gary A
A friend of mine bough 50 silver dollars from a night/weekend market. I saw them and they looked very good. Unfortunately a magnet would pick them up.
Thanyaburi Mac
Check the dates on these " Republique Francaise" Indochine Piastres, pictured in Vientiane last year. Don't believe the French even got there until the mid-1800s. However, such "genuine" coins are for sale all over the place. I was up in NE Laos three weeks back, Sam Nuea city, asked a gal at a shop for some real ones, she had both, higher price on the real ones, of course, forget the price now.
