Munto Finance Completes Notts Acquisition

Posted on: Wed 15 Jul 2009

Munto Finance today announces that, following successful due diligence, it has completed the acquisition of Notts County Football Club.

Peter Trembling becomes executive chairman with immediate effect.

Commenting on the completion of the takeover, Peter Trembling said: "I firmly believe this is a momentous day for all those involved with Notts County, particularly for the club's loyal supporters. I can promise them that the new owners and my management team will do everything that we can to bring back success to Meadow Lane."

Munto is committed to making funds available in a structured and sensible manner that enables Peter Trembling and his team to carry out their strategic plan to return stability and success to the world's oldest football league club.

This includes:

* continue to make funds available to Ian McParland to improve the current squad; in particular focussing on signing experienced players with proven ability and leadership qualities;

* improve off field facilities to attract, retain and develop young talent to the club, with an eye on future success;

* manage the club in a responsible manner, introducing commercial and financial disciplines, to ensure that after an initial period of investment, the Club is able to steadily rise through the tables depending upon its own resources and become an established Championship side within 5 years;

* capitalise on the unique opportunity afforded by the club's proud heritage and history (as the world's oldest football league club) to attract new sponsors, commercial, community and sporting partners;

* improve all areas of the physical infrastructure associated with the football side of the club, including: upgrading the ground and pitch and investing in the training, medical, and youth academy facilities;

* build closer links with all aspects of the community in Nottingham; local government, schools, charities and other local bodies; and

* invest in the stadium and surrounding area to create a year-round family centric venue that will include top class restaurants, modern and convivial dining experiences, crèche facilities, as well as high quality conference and banqueting.

Peter Trembling, added: "We want to create an exciting match-day and all year round Meadow Lane experience and our investment programme is planned to deliver long term stability.

"The investment programme will ensure the financial stability, community involvement and success of Notts County both on and off the park.

"We are showing our commitment to the club and the surrounding community and I hope that we can attract many more people to this unique club over the coming years."

Ahhh, Notts County, broke our hearts once or twice in the past at Upton Park stopping us from winning the Division One Championship ( or whatever it's called )...

I've been to Meadow Lane a few times too, once when you stuffed as 3-0 i think, once when we won 1-0 with a last minute Trevor Morley Volley & once in the FA Cup when we drew 1-1 at your place when we wore the Blue top with 2 Claret Hoops, nice place, nice people.. :)

Well I haven't seen them since I was a child (we left England in 1954). Used to go on the bus by myself to Meadow Lane regularly. In 1953-54 it was seen as quite a safe thing for a 9-10 year-old to do. I'm a West Ham fan now, but still have a big soft spot for County and really hope they get a new lease of life. They were almost defunct a few years ago.

Sounds like you must be around my age, as it was in the late 50's that I first went over West Ham and stood behind the goal in the North Bank with my brother. But I also have a soft spot for Notts County in the same way as I have for the likes of Exeter - who were also bailed out from becoming extinct at one stage by the local community.

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is in talks with Notts County about becoming director of football, BBC Radio Nottingham understands.

The Magpies, who have recently been taken over by a Middle-Eastern consortium, are refusing to confirm or deny the reports.

Earlier newspaper reports had linked Eriksson with the club's manager role.

The 61-year-old, who spent five years in charge of England, was sacked as coach of Mexico in April.

BBC Radio Nottingham's Colin Slater said: "Claims that Notts are to appoint Eriksson as manager today are wide of the mark.

"It is far more likely Eriksson will be brought in as director of football."

The former Manchester City manager is not the only high-profile name to be linked with the job.

Slater added: "My understanding is that Eriksson is not the first high-profile personality to be linked with the newly created post as director of football.

"Former England manager Glenn Hoddle has also been in the frame."

When The Magpies start guzumping Manchester City , then they'll all take notice.

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson is in talks with Notts County about becoming director of football ...

According to the BBC, that's actually been confirmed now. Ian McParland is also staying on as manager.

Yes the Sun says he's going to be on 2 mill a year as director of football, this charlatan has an uncanny knack of landing on his feet no matter how many times he messes up, i genuinelly despise the man from his time in charge of England.

Surely theyd be better off buying several players with this money, then give it to footballs greatest ever carpet bagger.

A couple of funny postings on the 'Telegraph' Forum :-

"Haven't Notts County suffered enough already.'

and

Balls. That's what Sven's going to need.

The last one got kicked into the Trent during "kickabout" last week. :)

He has officially got the job, stating "IM NOT HERE FOR THE MONEY, BUT FOR THE CHALLENGE!" ..... b*llsh*t.

He's got his gimp Tord Grip a job too.

He is a greedy <deleted>, who is only there for the money and probably the women. I think Nottingham has the biggest ratio of women to men in the uk 6:1. Sure he'll be out shagging around as always.

On a serious side Erikson is sooooooo the wrong man for this job! Exactly what would he know about League 2 footy and all that goes with it? They really needed an english battlehardened manager whose been around and knows the ins and outs of the leagues and players. As much as I dispise him but Colin wanke_r (Neil Warnock for those unaware!) springs to mind. At Stoke we even recruited ex Vale manager John Rudge as our director of football because of the exact reason that he has a huge knowledge and time of players and is a respected time served manager in the English leagues.

Erikson will turn up wondering where his Recaro seat and private box is - let alone going out in the rain checking out the kind of player Notts County need to compete in L2! QPR have given a perfect example that money alone doesn't guarantee success and without a director or manager either used to working in the lower leagues or a fresh face eager to prove himself County will struggle.

Don't get me wrong Erikson is a good manager however at the top level and with a large budget - not L2 up against bullies playing kick and rush!

Just to add to the circus they now a clown as a manager - step forward Phil 'Umpalumpa' Brown! :)

To be fair, he has acknowledged that it'll be a challenge. By which I assume he means that he knows little about life in the lower divisions, and by implication is willing to learn.

Don't get me wrong Erikson is a good manager however at the top level and with a large budget - not L2 up against bullies playing kick and rush.

But he's not taking over Ian McParland's job as manager. Sven has been given the job of Director Of Football.

Actually, I'm a bit less concerned about what he is , or is not, than if he does a job for Notts County and helps them move up a division or two. We shall see.

I understand that. But as a DoF he is supposed to be a person that McParland can use for additional intelligence and be the 'knowledge' for him to fall back on and the fact he probably knows the square root of diddly squat about lower league football is a bit of a problem!

I hope County do well actually whether Sven will be any help is something I am skeptical of!

Maybe ol Svenn heard they are going to erect a Viagra factory in Notts that he could volunteer for the trials of a new version that you give to ugly women to make them attractive.

I'm not sure what a DOF's role is really. Although from what I can gleam off the radio, McParland will still be in charge of team selection. So I guess that you're right in thinking that he'll just be some sort of technical/tactical advisor. But I take your point about knowing nothing of the nitty-gritty of lower-league football in England. Although, as I understand it, he had taken a couple of Swedish lower league clubs' to a degree of success -- and promotions in one instance -- earlier in his career.

I suppose that personally the name Sven-Goran Eriksson leaves a bad taste in many England supporters mouths because of the way that he fleeced the FA out of millions when he was sacked. Although that was more due the FA's eternal bumbling than anything. But to Eriksson's credit he never liked Thaksin when at Citeh, and that really showed.

In a way it's a pity that when they were a supporter owned club that they never succeeded, then perhaps they'd have been more comparable to a Barcelona than a Juventus. Or am I getting carried away here ? :)

EXCLUSIVE: Backe arrives at Notts County

Tuesday, October 27, 2009, 10:55

HANS Backe arrived at Meadow Lane with director of football Sven-Goran Eriksson today to thrash out a deal to become Notts County's new manager.

Backe said he is "99 per cent" certain of becoming the Magpies next boss.

And the Evening Post snapped him arriving with Eriksson at the club this morning.

The 57-year-old has worked closely with Eriksson in the past at both domestic and international level, with Backe assistant to Eriksson at Manchester City and when the Swede was in charge of Mexico.

Backe said: "It's 99 percent a done deal for me to join Notts County.

"I want to get back into the daily routine with practice, I've felt a longing for a long time now.

"It's possible that the next two-three years will be my last as a club manager."

(Nottingham Evening Post 27 October 2009)

Looks like it's just about a done deal. Generally supported by County fans judging by the forums in the Notts County Mad site. They weren't so keen when everyone was speculating, but are looking on the bright side now. Mind you, some are pretty hard to please. A number are complaining about the infusion of Munto funds bringing on "franchise football" and predicting tears and gnashing of teeth down the line. Others can't believe the club's good fortune, however, one likening it to the transition from pauper to princess.

NOTTS COUNTY CONTROVERSY

Sol Campbell accuses Notts County

Speaking to ESPN Soccernet, Sol Campbell has called on Notts County to honour their promise to release him from his contract so he can carry on with his football career.

Sol Campbell played only one game for Notts County.

• Campbell threatened by County gag

• Trembling denies claims

ESPN Soccernet broke the story about players' union leader Gordon Taylor being called in by Campbell to resolve what is developing into a bitter legal dispute with County over the player's release.

Campbell claims Notts County are holding onto his registration despite making a public announcement that the player had left the club five weeks ago by 'mutual consent'.

The former England, Arsenal, Tottenham and Portsmouth centre half said: "More than a month ago, Notts County issued a statement and went on TV to say that I had left by 'mutual consent'. But they have moved the goalposts, and I am still a Notts County player!

"They are holding me to my contract - but not even paying me. They are stopping me playing. They hold all my papers, my registration, and I cannot take my case to the Football League for dispensation to play for another club while I am stuck at Notts County.

"This could have been such an easy situation to resolve but not now that they have changed the goalposts.

"They tried to gag me for five years, then they said they wanted to gag me until the end of the season. Then they said they wanted £100,000 compensation, and then they suggested a loan deal. It looks to me as if they want some money if I move to another club.

"Yet I had agreed my release with two of their directors. I have the letter headed paper on which they agreed to release me. But as I said, they have moved the goalposts, and they are refusing to cancel my contract as they agreed to do weeks ago."

Despite being threatened with a gagging order, Campbell has spoken out to ESPN Soccernet, with Taylor insisting it is inappropriate to attempt to take away Campbell's freedom of speech.

Since news of his exit from Meadow Lane, Campbell has had approaches from numerous clubs and has the opportunity to return to the Premier League.

He tells me: "I have had many offers, and there is an opportunity with a Premier League club as well as Football League clubs. But they ask me about my situation and they are waiting for me to clear up this mess at Notts County, and it is turning into a mess."

ESPN Soccernet broke the story this week of how Taylor has been called in by Campbell to try to broker a deal to release the player, and how lawyers are now involved. Taylor was said it was one of the most bizarre cases he has ever dealt with.

Notts County chief executive Peter Trembling has also been exclusively interviewed by ESPN Soccernet on this issue, and he insists that Campbell is restricted by a confidentiality clause that already exists in his contract, and that the club will release him as soon as the player's lawyer gets back to him.

Taylor is attempting to negotiate a form of statement that both parties will be happy with, as Campbell is determined to clear his name of walking out of Notts County without a due cause.

The whole Sol Campbell episode (not long enough to be a "saga") was bizarre, part of the soap opera that has been Notts County in recent weeks. Still, now the ownership issue's been put to bed and it seems Notts have a manager, everyone can focus on getting out of League Two. I suspect the current spat over Campbell is a storm in a teacup and will be settled quickly. Confidentiality clauses are fairly standard in many contracts, but I doubt Notts would want to be further distracted by Campbell and Taylor. Let's see (perhaps County enjoy being a soap opera.) :)

92% believe Notts will either be automatically promoted or in the playoffs this season.

A poll running in the Nottingham Evening Post has 68% of respondents predicting that County will be automatically promoted at the end of the year and 24% saying they'll be in the play-offs.

0% said that they'd end up in the bottom of the table, but 4% say they'll be relegated. :)

Rumours are that Notts are looking to sign Richard Wood, current Sheffield Wednesday captain. There will be money to buy players in January, but manager Hans Backe has not named names, saying he wants to have a good look at the players he's got first.

Notts County closer to Sol Campbell compromise

28 Oct 2009

http://soccernet.espn.go.com/news/story?id=690502&cc=4716

Campbell reacted positively when ESPN Soccernet told the former England star of the latest developments in his unusual case.

"I said at the time I would be happy to agree a confidentiality agreement until the end of the season," Campbell said. "Then the lawyers told me it would be five years, and that was out of the question.

"In an effort to resolve this situation, I would be prepared to sign a confidentiality agreement so long as it is only until the end of the season. It sounds as if we are making progress and I am sure my lawyers will show me the compromise agreement some time later today [Wednesday]."

Notts County 0 Aldershot 0

Scoreless draw at Meadow Lane against a mid-table side.

The euphoria is fading. Fans are divided between the doomsayers and those who plead patience.

County are still in 6th place, but Peter Trembling's hype about paying in Europe and being a popular brand in Asia is looking even more fanciful than it did a couple of weeks ago.

Still, Notts are moving forward, and now that they're perceived as the spoilt brats of League Two, perhaps the mediocre teams (Morecambe, Bury, etc) are lifting when playing them.

Interesting times ahead. I wonder how long it took before Cinderella became polished enough to mix in high society?
