As I am fairly new to this type of communication, internet forum/blog/chat, what is the role of the moderator? This is not ment to be a personal attack on any one in particular, but to find out what my limits are to be. Someone will surely tell me to read the rules, but there are rules and then there are rules. If rules are to truly meaningful then they have be applied in an unbiasised manner.

Would like to hear from others.

Thanks :)

The moderator's job is quite simply to keep things from going off the rails. Much of it involves removing spam and other garbage, and making sure stuff that would get the site closed down does not see the light of day. In return for their efforts they usually get crapped on. :D

So be nice to your friendly neighbourhood mod. :)

I think all the Moderators have their own personal view / opinion and so it is not easy for contributors to this forum to know exacly what is or can be accepted .

I recently posted on the financial thread about commodity prices , which was closed because not thai related , however a lot of discussion on that thread is not thai related - So ?

If you want a proper discussion about life in thailand then TV is not the place to do it.

Yeah, That's why it's as big and popular as it is. :)

Mods are just people, and with individuality comes some variances in judgement. Over all, it's pretty even handed. I've managed almost 13,000 posts without a single suspension and I can be a complete PITA sometimes. :D

They have a very difficult job to ensure posts and posters keep within the rules, particualrly to avoid legal issues.

Thailand makes this even more difficult. The wrong post by a single idiot can bring you serious trouble.

I sometimes come on the wrong end of an argument with a mod, and of course they win as they have the buttons. I can be angry at them then, but must admit they generally do a good job.

hmmm

just see this now

as per the rules, Im closing the thread

but thoughts have been shared

so I will add mine before closing it.

as said MODs try to keep discussions within forum rules, which all members by signing up have agreed to. some things are clear cut against forum rules and are dealt with accordingly.

some are not so clear cut, and we discuss amongst MODs to get differing views.

usually if a MOD has been involved in the actual discussion of the topic, then we ask a different MOD to step in if thread is going against forum rules.

theres lots more that goes into any decision a MOD takes, but I just thought Id share some aspects of it. I suppose to try and let our members know that we dont take it lightly and do try to be fair with our decisions.

some threads we might be more lenient on, some not. some of this at times depends on the nature of the subject matter - for instance things illegal under thai law then we certainly have to be less flexible. other situations that usually necessitate strict enforcement of the rules is when it involves respect and civility come to mind is when discussions show disrespect/insensitivity to an individual or groups.

my answers are not exhaustive, but as discussing moderation is really against forum rules, Ive already gone further than I should. I now have to close this.

regards

I think they do ok, they have a difficult job I would like to see things tightened up a bit more, because some of the crap that gets put on here is just not worth the space.

Just as well I'm not a mod, i'd probably delete 60% of the posts.
