Looking For A Second-hand Appliances Shop

Recommended Posts

I'm looking for a used domestic fridge and an electric oven (for baking - not microwave). Does anyone know of anywhere worth trying? Any advice on buying these items second-hand? I may only need them for a matter of months and so don't really want to splurge on buying new if I can avoid it. Then again, if it's generally seen as a pretty risky thing to do I'd need to reconsider. Thanks.

Nothing electric last to long here, but repairs are cheap, as long as you know a good repairman, [some will repair with cheep part stamped made in China which last just a few months] best if you want 2nd hand to look at advert where people are leaving and there items a only a few months old.

I posted a similar request about 6 months ago and aside from a couple of private sales and an old second hand fridge shop, nobody managed to provide info. Definitely an opportunity for a decent second hand shop in Chiang Mai like the one in Lamai, Koh Samui, run by Kirk from Switzerland.

Try posting on Rimping notice boards and the classifieds here on TV.

Personally I would be reluctant to buy anything second hand in Thailand.

Thais never get rid of anything. They prefer to run things into the ground than still try and get another 5 years out of something.

This may be of interest to you:

2 days ago I was in the Icon shop next to the computer Plaza. They were having a sale on fridges, fridge freezers and lots of other electrical goods.

These were not second hand, but old stock that had been kept in a warehouse too long or possible stock that had been use for display items. Some had a few scratches or were a bit dusty.

Many of these items were marked down to 50% of the normal price. Maybe worth a look

There are second hand appliance shops around in Chiang Mai, the one I am most familiar with is a small shop in Mae Jo, on the main strip in town, across from MJU; going north through town on the 1001 CM-Phrao, it's on the left, in the shop row after the first pedestrian overpass. TVs, refrigerators, washing machines etc., I don't know about bakers oven, but I think I've seen toaster ovens. They have a big turnover because of the university students coming and going.

It's been a few years since I've been in, but there was a big shop in Nong Hoi, on the CM-Lamphun road, going south toward Sarapee, it's on the right maybe a couple of hundred meters before the intersection with the Holiday Inn and hospital.

I've bought used appliances and been satisfied, but you have to be very selective, choose a good brand and check it out thoroughly as you can in the shop, and pin them down for a 30 day guarantee. You won't get more than 30 days and if they won't give you that then walk away; they have checked out the appliances they sell and sometimes have repaired or rebuilt them, they know what they are selling you and should stand by it for a trial period.

So you're suggesting that the OP should make a trip from C.M. to Pattaya to buy a used fridge from a bar girl?

Now that could be an interesting adventure; please report back.
