Hello,

I am here with no visa. When I got to the airport(baltimore intl) I was almost denied my boarding pass for not having a visa. I get here and am informed that I need a visa to stay. I have went for a couple of interviews which I believe will yield a visa, although have not yet. I need to know all available options in terms of visas.

A little bit about my situation. I am an American citizen here with my wife who is pregnant and expecting to deliver around october. I plan to go back to college in the not to distant future but for the time being I need to work(because the mrs. is not able to at all). I am not totally sure if the jobs I interviewed for will help me get a visa or not, or wether they actually intend on hiring me.

I have read a bit about the ED visa, visa runs, spouse visa, etc. but am not to sure of how to go about appyling. Please!! PLEASE!!! help me. All info on this topic would be very much appreciated.

If you just use normal font it will help us. And what is your wife's status? Thai? That is critical for any information. One very important item is that you must have a work permit to do any work here so be very careful on that point.

Yes. She is a Thai citizen. It is common sense that you need a work visa in order to work. My point is many places will help you get a work visa. Actually you need them to apply for you if I am not mistaken.

Which Visa do you hold now?

If you have a tourist Visa you cannot work, you need to get a Non Immigrant Visa, if you are married to a Thai you can apply for a Non Immigrant O Visa but you need to show an income of 40,000baht per month or 400,000 baht in an account for 3 months (first application). The company should help you get the paperwork together for a work permit, if you are going to teach you might need other things such as a Thai Culture Course.

If you need information then post more about what kind of job, what visa you currently have, this not only helps you but helps the others in giving you sound advice.

There is no such thing as a work visa. A visa and a work permit are two seperate things.

You have several options for a visa.

- a non-O visa based on being married to a Thai national

- a non-B visa based on your employment.

if you want a one year extension of stay based on that you need to comply with the following:

- based on mariage: have an income of 40,000 baht a month OR a bankaccount with at least 400,000 baht for the last 2 months.

- based on work: have an income of at least 50,000 baht and the company has to meet several criteria. For a teacher there is no required minimum income.

You could convert to either visa if you meet these requirements and have at least 21 days remaining on your permission to stay.

You can extend your current permission to stay by 60 days for 1,900 baht on show of proof of being married to a Thai national. Take the wife with you.

A work permit and a visa are two very different items issued by different sections of Government. Yes, you will need a visa that allows the issue of a work permit. But no visa allows work. The work permit is issued by the local labor office and is only available for jobs that a Thai can not do and the employer must meet very special paperwork requirements. For most people this means teaching English or starting there own business if they have the capital. It seems you do not have any visa if airport gave you a problem so that should be your first item of attention. Take marriage certificate/wife ID card and home register to Vientiane or Malaysia and obtain a non immigrant O visa. Cost will be about 2,000 baht for single entry visa and issued next workday afternoon. You will then have a 90 day stay on return and can obtain a work permit when/if you find a job.
