Where Is Cdma Avaliable?

Featured Replies

hi,

I'm about to go on a long trip all around Thailand ... where's CDMA available? is it already all over the country?

thanks

Yes and no. CDMA is split between Hutch and CAT. Unfortunately (TIT) the companies refuse to work with each other.

Get EV-DO for those times you're outside of BKK and Chonburi and use a mobile phone with EDGE for those times you're inside the aforementioned places...

Hi.

Do you need CDMA as in "phone" or as in "data"..? Because regardless idf you use Hutch or CAT, they "roam" on each other's network (which really is just one network!) for voice calls and SMS just fine. I have both Hutch and CAT phones and can use either one everywhere.

Data is a different pair of shoes - a CAT phone/modem works only in CAT's area while a Hutch phone/modem will work only in the Hutch coverage area.

If you use a mobile phone as modem (153 kbit/s, CDMA 2000-1x) and you got a Samsung phone for that purpose be aware that those can rather easily be unlocked to accept the competitor's SIM card, for example if you normally live up north and got a CAT Samsung you can buy a pre-paid Hutch SIM card, unlock your phone and when you get into the Hutch area (central Thailand, i.e. Bangkok and around) you can use that to go online. Only Samsung phones can be unlocked!!

All of this is based on pure idiocy - the nationwide CDMA network does in fact belong to CAT, however in the central region Hutch does the marketing. Every Hutch-flyer you get hold of will state on the back "CDMA by CAT". As a result of this strange agreement the one network is semi-split between the two companies CAT Telecom and Hutchison CAT Multimedia. I have been with Hutch since a few months after they went live and i am probably one of the first to use a pre-paid CAT number, too. Meanwhile these are even available in Bangkok (i got mine, including the phone, in Chiang Mai).

Best regards....
