hi group

I have a new baby boy due soon, I want to name him Bobby, but somebody told me that is a nickname for a dog in a thai (possibly Kmer) slang? can anybody cponfirm this?, or what else does bobby mean in thai/slang khmer/slang or even issan/slang. Thanks in advance.

Yes we have a dog here named Bobby and he is a biting mongrel if I had half a chance I would kill him as we have a 3 month old baby boy.

Bobby would sound like Baw Bay in Isarn which means something like Mot Laew or Mai mee.

I'd choose another name if you're going to be living in Thailand.

Well, stick to your guns, I'd say, if it's your first choice. If we considered all the words in all the dialects here we'd probably be able to find a term fairly close to our name which is not to our liking. Not forgetting the name can of course be shortened and you might not always live in Thailand.

I can only come up with ปอบ (ogre) , as in ผีปอบ. Thai2English.com also renders พี as "fat" (ปอบพี = fat ogre?).

Bobby is probably the most used dog name in Dutch.

Probably because of the ตินติน cartoons of Herge, which also have been translated to Thai.

Tintin dog's name was Milu, I think.

My first thought was that a Thai pronunciation of Bobby could sound a lot like the Thai pronunciation of Puppy and I have heard of many Thai dogs being named Puppy.

For what it is worth, in the Swedish translation of Tintin, the dog's name was 'Milou' as well.

In Dutch it's Bobby and in Thai it's สโนวี่ or มีลู (strange, why 2 names ...)

So, that's not the reason...my mistake...

Firstr of all Congratulation for your new baby !!

Well, bobby is a popular dog name in TL. One of mine 4 legs mate is bobby. However, one of my 2 legs mate is also bobby, he is 100% Thai.

My opinon, if you like the name, just use it.
