We all know that we should save water where possible but new TV ads are encouraging Brazilians to take an extra step - by urinating in the shower.

Brazilian environmental group SOS Mata Atlantica has launched the campaign, running on several television stations, to persuade people to reduce toilet flushes.

The group says if a household avoids one flush a day, it can save up to 4,380 liters (1,157 gallons) of water annually.

SOS spokeswoman Adriana Kfouri said the ad is "a way to be playful about a serious subject."

The ad features cartoon drawings of people from all walks of life - a trapeze artist, a basketball player, even an alien - urinating in the shower. There's even a scene from the movie "Psycho" in there.

Narrated by children's voices, the ad ends with: "Pee in the shower! Save the Atlantic rainforest."

So you have to ask yourself: how strong is your commitment to saving water?

The world should adapt this strategy and add to this the prevalent Thai custom of pissing along the roadside, in alleyways, behind the nearest tree/bush and viola a giant step toward reduction of water usage. The man probably watched his son in the shower and got the idea or maybe he has this habit (not unheard of) although we use to refer to "you probably piss in the shower" much in the same way as the 'redneck' title.

How much water are you saving by showering every time you need to urinate?

obviously you need to use common sense.

if your having a shower and need to urinate, then urinate.

if you need to urinate and dont need a shower then dont have a shower.

Everyone could save even more water by taking a sh*t in the shower as well, just squeeze it down the drain with your toes, then piss on your feet to clean them.

You sir, are a genius. Now THIS is the stuff we need on Thaivisa. :)

You can learn a lot about the state of your health and digestion by inspecting your feces. Shitting in the shower gives oneself a chance to do a thorough inspection, plus you can save water and clean yourself better than any other method.

The plumbing must be good though for this method to work.

It works to pee in the shower as long as you are taking a shower. Otherwise the shower starts to smell bad!

One night when I was out with a large group of colleagues, this topic came up and I was very surprised to find out that quite a few people do pee in the shower.

I think it has something to do with the sound of running water, which stimulates the "I have to pee" sensors.

I thought everybody peed in the shower.

Just glad we don't have baths here as back home.

One thing to consider for most of us (i.e., most of Thailand): bath and sink waste water does not go down a sewer to a processing plant. At best, in the high end developments, buried pipes dump the waste water right out side your house into a covered culvert. It then flows into a "sewer" under the side walk which, in turn, dumps into a canal, klong, stream somewhere. It is bad enough that it includes the water from all household sources except the toilets. I am sure you all have walked on a sidewalk and gotten those wonderful smells coming up through the hole in the covers.

The average house (thinking of the country as a whole) simply dumps the bathroom floor and all sink drains in an shallow open channel and off the property to somewhere/something.

So my immediate thought is, no matter where you live, if your family uriates in the shower, you will soon notice some change in the odor around your house.

Only toilets dump into a septic tank.

Cheers for the info, appreciated.

If 3 members of my family pee once a day out of 2/3 showers each a day and only one (me) an alcohol drinker, there will be about 250ml to 60 litres of water or 1/240 washed down with soap, shampoo and conditioner. I'm hoping my drains will not notice the difference.
