Im trying to work out a decent translation for the paragraph below, but having little success.

"No need to be super strong to be a super hero. The real Superheroes are those who perform small acts of kindness everyday".

I have tiny snippets that i have tried to work out on my own..but im not really getting anywhere.

and i mean tiny! ie: "Superhero" ตัว จริง are those who ... as well as some written phonetically as best i can (which i cant work out in Thai script). ie: kuu puu tii saa dang awk duay. Jai may dtah samuh samuh. (Probably doesnt make sense...!!)

Would be most grateful for help in getting that sentence across well in Thai.

Thanks so much guys!

The way that I would approach this is to take out all the 'super'fluous stuff, because it would have no meaning in Thai or if it does you are not likely to get the right word, when slimmed-down make it a simple statement like 'not need to have stronger than normal body to be hero ก็ must do good deeds only' The play on 'super' probably wont work because whereas 'super-hero' would 'super strong' may not.

สุดยอด in front of the noun could be used, but 'hero' is 'hero' in Thai, borrowed word, there is no guarentee that Thais understand it to be related to strength, maybe superhuman qualities, what do you mean by it? something to do with values isn't it?

When we have the English right then start on the Thai but in order to make it a profound statement we will need a Thai poet.

You start it off, it could become a good thread.

Thanks tgeezer!

The title of "Superhero" is important, as thats the topic of the project. But, I am not sure if "Superhero" is used in the Thai language, or if they have their own specific word for it (as in Superman, Spiderman etc). The feel/theme is regarding the concept of a modern day Superhero, and what that means to us. The sentence is for kids as well as adults, so wish it to not be too embellished, as i would like kids to understand well too. Yes, has a values theme in it, but dont wish to come on too heavy. Its for a short comical animation and that closing sentence will hopefully bring about a smile.

Have no idea how to go about that!!

edit: oh and the reason for referencing the strength part is because the animation features a young kid type character striving to gain muscles by using free-weights to be more like his idol Superman, only to remain puny. But he does something small and kind, so in the eyes of the thing he helped, he is a hero, and that makes him feel good..so..thats where the final sentence comes in.

He wants to be a super hero, if that is the topic then you must have it already, anyway that is probably the same in Thai. The moral side of the superhero is important; kids get this easily. They are 'superior people' = ยอดมนุษย working out is all about appearance, big muscles= กลัมใหญ่ which you don't need= ไม่ต้องมี He wants to be= อยากเป็น how to be= ต้อง a good hearted person= จิตใจงดงาม is sufficient= เท่าน้ัน

ถ้าอยากเป้น (superhero) ยอดมนุษย์ ไม่ต้องมีกลัมใหญ่ ต้องจิตใจงดงามเท่านั้น

I must admit that I have shifted it around to make it fit what I knowม now you have a go.

การเป็นซูเปอร์ฮีโร่ ไม่จำเป็นเลยที่จะต้องเป็นคนแข็งแรงเกินมนุษย์ ซูเปอร์ฮีโร่ของจริงก็คือคนที่คอยช่วยเหลือผู้อื่นแบบเล็ก ๆ น้อย ๆ ในแต่ะวันต่างหาก

Quick attempt...doesn't really flow well yet but I'm confident it would be understood. Tgeezer's idea of กล้ามใหญ่ could also be used. I'd like to find something better for 'small acts of kindness'.

Guys, you are waaay advanced for me! But im trying. I really appreciate the time you are taking to consider this paragraph.

As for small acts of kindness. I dont have an idea on that, but I finally worked out the Thai script for my first idea which was: ไจ เมตตา เสมอ เสมอ (sorry i tend to break up written Thai at the moment, because its easier for me to read).

more about being kind everyday. Not sure how well that works though.

This is good, thanks for being จิตใจงดงาม by not pointing out my spelling mistake.

I am trying to be more enigmatic (Thai?) I thought that since it was a cartoon the pictures would show the small acts of kindness and in fact, spell out the situation.

My dict. shows เกินคน ว. เลิศกว่าตนสามัญ= special person?

Is it necessary to say 'small' acts of kindness? can it be said without excluding 'big' acts of kindness?

I would like to say 'acts of kindness, however small' but don't know how.

What about เมตตา eek? nice word but it is a noun, you seem to be using it as an adjective. Its a good one though. เมตตาใจดี you could probably say, maybe not if writing, and เสมอ means 'level' maybe it is used to mean constancy but don't know. I think ทุกวัน is every day.

We are just stumbling around now, If you just want the correct thing we need the Thai members to chip-in.

Yes, just a quick note on that one. The animation shows the situation (no words, just actions), and the sentence is at the end, just to close the sequence. A moral of sorts.

Thanks again both.

eek,

this is a good opportunity to practise if you'd like to come up with a message in your own words. i'd suggest breaking it down into small, manageable chunks and then putting it all together -- or asking others for advice -- once you have the basic building blocks assembled.

since this is your sentence, you can be a bit flexible about the terms if you like, and use either Thai script or transliteration. you have already come up with some of these.

eg.

1.superhero = superhero

2.no need/not necessary/don't have to =

3.powerful/strong/muscular/tough =

4.super/unusually/very/greatly/especially =

5.the real [superheroes] = ตัวจริง (your original idea. fine.)

6.people =

7.people who [do X/are X] =

8.perform small acts of kindness = (this I think is a bit unnecessarily tricky. you might be able to reword this so you can break it down more easily, eg. help others, be kind, etc. actually, i see you've done this already.)

9.every day =

once you have come up with a set of terms you're happy with, you might be surprised at how directly they can be put together. i'm sure people can give some suggestions if you're stuck on any of the above terms. good luck!

Again, thanks. I'll work though your tips and post later on.

One more thing. Could anyone confirm that ซูเปอร์ ฮีโร่ ความทะเยอทะยาน works ok as the equivalent of "Superhero Ambitions" ?

--

Thanks! :)

You're going to have to explain what you mean by 'superhero ambitions': ambitions to become a superhero? ambitions of a superhero? ambitions like a superhero? something else?

Posted

ambitions of becoming like a superhero (as in physically strong like superman - the characters hero).

Are you guilty of trying to turn English into Thai? I don't know how you would describe what you have there, does superhero define the ambition(s) as an adjective like 'big' describes plans in 'big plans'? I can only just get my head around that in English, so I think it might be quite a leap for us to try to teach Thais that 'super hero' can be an adjective.

you could use ใฝ่ฝันเป็นซูเปอร์ฮีโร่ (to dream of becoming a superhero)

Now that I know that it is a title it works for me in English and will in Thai I am sure.

eek, if you're going to use my earlier translation (response to your first question), you should take out the ก็. I changed the ending and forgot to remove it.

Can look like this:

ไม่ต้องเป็นจัดมากให้เป็นซุปเปอร์ฮีโร่. ซุปเปอร์ฮีโร่จริงเป็นผู้ดำเนินการน้อยน้ำใจทุกวัน.

As for hero we use ฮีโร่.

As for word "super", can transliterate it like ซุปเปอร์.

Hope it helps.
