Information From Your Child's Nursery Or Preschool

Of course I should have remembered myself that Aug 12 and Dec 5 are special days in Thailand. But today i forgot.

So after 2 hours preparation, we took the children to nursery. On the way we gave our laundry to our regular laundryshop. The lady asked: Where do you go? My wife said: To school. "Isn't itclosed today?", was the answer.

I knew by intuition that something was wrong, but my wife said that no message had been given by the school that it would be closed today. But yesterday Isaw a paper in the window where they sell candy, icecream and other garbage to the pupils: It occured to me that it was a notice of something - but I didn't bother to ask what is was (it was written in Thai).

So:

1) Should the school have informed parents explicitely that the school is closed today?

2) Are wifes supposed to know themselves?

3) Are farangs supposed to remember or check publig holidays in Thailand.

In my country you get an activity plan for every month, with all days closed clearly stated.

Also they write down name, adress and telephone number for parents, uncles and aunts, and grandparents.

Our school, which has pupils from wealthy chinese, policemen, gov. officials etc. only take the housebook address for my wife and hers and my telephone number.

If wife and I have a serious accident daytime, the school won't even be able to know where to dump the children (excuse me for the language).

Am I paranoid or is this TIT?

you want everything spoon fed to you. what country do u come from?

my thai husband showed up for work on a religious holiday in israel that i forgot restaraunts are closed for the most part (optional but apparently everyone in our nearby city closed down. the next city didnt close most of its shops as they are less religious.) it irritated the shit out of him that the boss didnt know and that i forgot. so life is tough. he went to drink at a friend's house instead. so u got up and went to school with your kid. u could use the rest of the day to go get icecream or something, whats the big deal.

also here, only numbers u give the kindergarten are of a parent or so, and they dont check id of the person comming to take the kid home. anyone can show up and take your kid.

if a parent doesnt show up, the kid goes home with the nanny/teacher or with a friend. most places in the world are not america.

from your posts u seem to be in major culture shock, not to thailand, but to be away from home from what is familiar to you. keep reminding yourself that u "are not in kansas anymore toto" and try to relax a bit from your expectations of everything being familiar and similar to 'back home'.

good luck

Thanks Bina.

Predictability, rationality and coherence are the fabric of my life.

I guess I have moved to the wrong country, or may be I don't understand the 'Happy go lucky' way.

Sorry for wanting some common sense.

Our daughter's [international] school doesn't close for all the Thai holidays but does close randomly for some other days. So yes, as a working parent I'd be pretty annoyed if the school was closed and they hadn't given parents a notice of some sort...
