Memory

I am obviously a beginner at this. I want to install some memory on my PC. I checked a web site that told me I had

"4 slots. 256mb. 256mb, empty, empty". Does that mean I have 512mb?

When I check properties on my computer it said I have 256mb

If I add another 256mb, What should it say in properties.

Also if you follow me so far, where is a good place to get it in Phuket?

Do I need to tell them anything specifically, and about how much would it be

Than you for your input

yes it says you have 512 and if you add one more it would 256 x 3 , my suggestion would be remove the two 256 and put in two 512s at least or even better put in two 1 gb

not sure where you get it in Phuket but most pc shops keep it get a few quotes on supply and install if you dont feel confident instaalling it.

If you go to the shop, take the memory out of your computer and bring it with you. You should also write down the brand and model of computer you have and bring that along. If it's not a brand name PC, check the speed/model of the CPU and bring that with you. That should be enough for them to figure out how much RAM your PC will support.

If this is a PC and your motherboard does only support 1GB of Ram then you use Ram which is hard to get these days.

As advised, take the Ram out and bring it to the shop. Take with you the manual for the motherboard too.

If you don't know your motherboard it should say on start up...

Put the name and model into search and add Review, this will take you to the motherboard website and tell you the speed and the max memory you can add eg: Asus Motherboard XYZ Reviews

No idea how old you PC is, in the old days if you did not have all the same size memory then you had to put the biggest one in slot 1.. for years in my PC have used matched pairs... eg: last PC had 4x 1GB DDR, in present one have 4x 1GB DDR2 all the same make and speed

I would advise you to take the computer to a shop. They will install and test the computer to make sure everything works. If you buy the RAM and it doesn't work, the shop will likely NOT give you a refund.

No. It says I have 256. If I add 2 more 256's Would that not be the same as taking out what I have and adding 2 X 512

Thanks

You have an old PC with old Ram. Ram what is sold these days may not work with your Sometimes Ram can be faulty too specially if you need old stuff.

So if you take your PC with you in the shop the technician can check how the bars work.

You may follow or you may not follow my advise but if you put new Ram into the emty slots, fire up your computer anf you hear a lot of "nrevous" beeps them something went wrong!

Best advise: take the PC to the shop or a repair shop. They can advise you and test.

My PC has 1GB (896) of RAM and want to upgrade to 4GB.

Does someone know the current prices? Brands?

Thanks in advance.

You can compare prices here > thanni.com. The link points to DDR2 memory since you don't mention your mainboard. I use Corsair myself but Kingston is a good choice.

BTW-unless you are running a 64-bit OS, the system will only see ~3GB of memory.

Thanks for the responses.

The main board is eMachines ET1300 (EMCP61PM-GM) and has a AMD Athlon Processor (LER-1640 2700 MHz) with 1024 MB DDR 2 (in fact I see only 896 MB) and I want to upgrade to 4GB.

After having checked that site I don't really know which one to choose:

- Kingston Hyper X Series 240 pin 4GB (2x2GB) DDR 2 1066 CL5 RAM (2.480 baht)

- ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, DDR 2 800 CL4 ,, (2.520 ,, )

- ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, ,, DDR 2 800 CL5 ,, (2.780 ,, )

Can you please help me?

Thank you.

You should find the answer in the mb manual-

Otherwise open your computer case and look at the motherboard.

There's (normally) a sticker which says what kind of mb you have.

Write it down and post it.

If you Google you can find some free utility which can determine whats inside your PC

does ur motherboard support 800mhz ddr2?

Sorry I'm a newbie :)

How can I check about it?

(2.7GHz, 512KB L2 Cache, 2000 MHz Bus)

ok after doing some search ur motherboard does support 800mhz rams.

you could just get some kingston DDR2 800mhz Valuerams

Memory • Four 240-pin DDR2 800/667/533/400 MHz SDRAM slots

• Support up to 4 GB system memory

On that website there are 2 Kingstons with 800MHz

-One is CL4 (2.520 baht) and the other, CL5 (2.780 baht)

Which one I should choose?

It sound like 1 of the 256's is faulty or not properly seated

if the OS only shows 256 of memory available.

Proably better to ditch them as SoS suggests.

1Gb will be enough unless you are a using heavy photo or video editing sw.

Your current config suggest you are not?

I have 2Gb running Windows XP and never see the second Gb in use.

Vista or Win 7 may be heavier on memory.

CL4 will be *slightly* faster than CL5, but the difference is negligible. The lower the latency the better. Unless you're a hardcore overclocker, I wouldn't worry about it too much. Real memory performance is measured in MHz.

From wikipedia:

CAS Latency (CL) is the time (in number of clock cycles) that elapses after the memory controller sends a request to read a memory location and before the data is sent to the module's output pins.
