8 Am Good Coffee/western Breakfast Places At Moat?

8 am is early for Western places. You'd perhaps be surprised to know that even Starbucks opens only like 10-11 or so.

A place that opens early (but perhaps 9am instead of 8?) and is on the moat is Mad Dog bar & restaurant. Coffee is ok but nothing special; at least it's not Nescafe. :o

If really 8am then I'd almost say it's going to be some hotel.. I'm not too current on hotel brekkies in Chiang Mai.

As for parking it's mostly not a serious issue in Chiang Mai, with the exception perhaps of the Night Bazar area.

D.K. Book center used to be an excellent place to park on the moat, but they now put on a sign saying it's customer-only parking, which frankly makes sense; it's kind of prime land there. :D It's not super-enforced but just out of fairness I don't attempt to park there anymore.

Cheers,

Chanchao

There's three or four places open on Ratchawitee at 8 am. That's round about the Irish Pub. No problem with parking at that time.

Maybe someone should open a Starbucks that opens early with a bookstore attached? :o

I stayed at the Montri right by Thapae gate last October. The breakfast was fine, with decent brewed coffee and nice baked goods. But, parking is tough right there.

Thanks Chanchao. Starbucks -- lazy! :D

I have been parking @ Porn Ping lately and breakfasting @ the little Cafe 20m up the street. Good coffee and omelettes etc. Breakfast at Porn Ping however, is not good. Would much prefer the Moat area.

I recall seeing that Hotel recently while lost driving around the Moat -- worth a try. Thanks. :o

Harmonica: I have eaten in the cafe at the Montri and find it to be equal to or better than when JJs was there and its successor that moved down the street and is now without airconditioning.

The cafte at Montri hotel is airconditioned, nice new decor and very comfortable high back chairs, kind of like a club in feeling.

There are five or six parking spots in the hotel parking lot in back with a back entrance through the hotel lobby but backing out and avoiding oncoming traffic in the one lane soi to the lot is problematical.

At 8am I doubt parking is a problem in front or in back.

I think the best western breakfast I have had in that area is at the Art Cafe. Tasty sausage patty. :o Excellent coffee as well.

Another good western breakfast, if you don't mind getting away from Thapae is at the PumPum guest house. Yummy.

Recommend breakfast at Mad Dog on the moat. Should be quiet around then. Choice of set breakfasts - enough to keep you going all day. Coffee pretty good. Also it's an "open bar" so it's like sitting outside with the moat just across the road. Can't stand aircon places myself.

As for Mad Dog, this is it:

Consider bringing your own orange juice. :o  (From the little Orange-booth outside Tesco  Lotus) :D You'd have to get that the day before as that too doesn't open until 8-10 or so.

What's with the OJ, Chanchao? Shown in the picture to the extreme right (following your link) is a glass of OJ with a large (superfluous?) British breakfast? Did I miss something?

It's OJ, but pretty yuckie. Like if you prefer nice and fresh then bring your own. :o Or opt for a fruit shake or lassi, they're nice and fresh. The lassi needs more yogurt though, but is still a nice drink.

I am not usually a breakfast kinda guy but friends yesterday took us to Bake & Bite on Changklan Rd and I ate until I had to be helped to our car!

The most outrageous variety of cinnamon rolls, breakfast sets with absolutely delicious sauteed potato slices with bacon, aarrgghh! A huge variety of homemade breads, banana pancakes, fruit lassies.. I am going back!

If you are going north on Changklan Rd, it is on the right JUST before the road becomes one-way in the opposite direction and there is roomy parking in the rear. This is the larger of their two locations and apparently the one closer to Thapae Gate is good for couples but their tables are quite small. VERY good fresh yogurt with Musli and fruit, veggie choices... Yum!

Thanks for that one.. will definitely give it a try!! I used to like the Thapae location for a while, but it IS small indeed. (And then there was one occasion where service was really reminiscent of being in the USA along with bread being a bit old.. I kind of stopped going after that)

But will definitely give them another try at Chang Klan! :o

Mango Tree Cafe - Open 7:30am.

Thank you. :D

Overpriced but within vaguely tolerable limits -- but the killjoy is your wife; insisted on pouring on the snakeoil sales pitch (directed at GF in Thai; without so much as an excuse me, may I etc.,) for some dubious beauty products that similar idiots were pushing back stateside 20 years ago (hehehhe) -- unsolicited, yet done forcefully, despite 2-3 hints that GF & I want to eat in peace and ALONE.

Never seen a Thai woman behave this way! :o:D

You're the owner -- you should know; so I'm telling you.

No hard feelings -- its forgotten already -- best of luck to you. :D

I am new here.

GF?

Gorgeous Female? George Foreman? Greasy Foreigner? Green Frog? Gentleman Friend...?

Not that it is any of my biz...

Thanks for your input tho; I will peek at their menu in the next few days and if I see oily beauty products for snakes on shelves, me and my snake will slither on down the road...
