Navagating Thailand

Featured Replies

Hi,

In Thailand I am always looking for addresses and locations of places that I need to get to or visit.

I have no idea how to find my way around Thailand.

Here in the USA, we have States, Counties Towns and Townships.

Could someone please explain how I can learn how the Country of Thailand is laid out and broken down into small areas.

The only thing I know and understand is that there are many provinces.

Is there a website, map or books I can buy in English to show or explain this?

Thank you kindly

Joe

Lonely Planet, Thailand is a good start. Or online search: Thailand, administrative divisions.

Wikipedia explains things quite well in English.

did you try Google Earth?

easiest way.

I have a GPS that lets me look up addresses but is much more complicated than GE's method (simply type in the address and it will show you a few options)

But there are 76 provinces (or thereabouts) and then it is broken down into towns or cities.

There are also postal codes but i don't know a way to search for them but it probably can be done

Then sois (streets).

There is also something called a moo (my address includes "moo 7") which i am not sure what it means but helps the postman deliver. I have found it still gets here whether you use it or not.

Its all explained here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muban and is what the op was requesting... I think?

Do you mean entering addresses and street names to lookup into a GPS system?

This does not work in Thailand. The English translation of the street names are usually misspelled. They are not listed.

So, you have to look for a Hotel nearby, a famous temple or building. My Garmin GPS has also shopping centers, and gas stations listed.

Moo is a further breakdown meaning village.

This is your BEST friend for Navigation around Thailand (or anywhere in the world)

http://maps.google.com/maps?q=&ie=UTF8...153637&z=13

1) You could search for places

2) You could find the route between a starting location and destination. Distance and Directions will be provided.

3) You could find Public Transportation for most areas

The key is learning to use the interface effectively. This requires some reading on the net about Google Maps (may be from Help Files or Tutorial) and more practice, practice and even more practice.
