Windows Bulk Copying Software

Featured Replies

Crew, I need to move the content of a couple of 320 GB HD's to a 1 TB HD. Tried MS synctoy some time ago at a different occasion and ended up finding half of the copied directories empty, so no faith in synctoy anymore. Tried Winnc, worked better but every time there is an checksum error it stops and needs me to click ok before it continues. I just need to copy as much as possible as fast as possible from one disk to the other. Any ideas?

Try the free Teracopy http://www.codesector.com/teracopy.php

Looks excellent, will try that, thanks!

I use a small program called FastCopy for copying large number/size of files between media > http://www.ipmsg.org/tools/fastcopy.html.en

//edit - the web page doesn't look like much but the program works quite nicely. :)

I'd tell you to use a Linux live cd/memory stick, but don't want to beat that dead horse.

Instead, use a *nix tool called dd that even Intel recommends. If I can't get y'all to use a real operating system, at least I can try and get you to use F/OSS.

I use Linux for my web servers managed through SSH, but prefer Windows on my desktop. Each to his :)

Very good recommendation!

My vote: Unstoppable Copier

No installation required. Runs from a small executable. Portable. Option of using GUI or command line.

Recovers files from disks with physical damage. Allows you to copy files from disks with problems such as bad sectors, scratches or that just give errors when reading data. The program will attempt to recover every readable piece of a file and put the pieces together. Using this method most types of files can be made useable even if some parts of the file were not recoverable in the end.

The program can be used as a daily backup system using its batch mode functions. A list of transfers can be saved to a file and then run from the command line to perform the same batch of transfers on a regular basis without having to use the GUI interface. The program supports command line parameters which allow the application to be run from schedulers or scripts so it can be fully integrated into daily server

tasks.

Looks interesting. As a novice, can you explain to the uninformed why this would be better than just copying files using Windows file copy?

Appreciate the advice.

The default copy and paste in windows lack a lot of features like pausing your copying or setting priority of how much cpu cycles should the process take or resume when the copying fails for example when you copy from a damaged CD or pen drive. Windows copy and paste fails when you have to deal with large files or a huge amount of small files . You can use the default windows copy paste if you want to move a few files but when you are moving huge file you need a better tool ! Hope that helps

Thanks. I'll give it a try.

Don't forget to turn off your anti-virus in order to speed things up a bit. And I second unstoppableCopier.

The BackItUp feature of Nero should work fine.

http://lifehacker.com/196122/geek-to-live-...tems-with-rsync  explains it best.

Many GUI's  are just using this anyway.   rsync will delete whats not on source and copy only whats missing or changed or you can select options to mod that and list exclusions even from a file list..

Even in windows the commandline is your friend.  :)

Use it anywhere between folders, drives or even between web sites, copy from linux to windows it don't care.

Oh and its free like in speech.

One more for the list.

I like the freeware version of syncback. It has been around a long time now and I still find it useful for what its name implies, synchronising and backing up files.

I have been a long time Syncback user also. It's fast, but dangerous if your aren't careful with it. More than once I haven't paid full attention and wiped files I didn't intend to, it was my fault, Syncback just did its work.
