The first time I travelled to Bali many years ago Kuta was just a quiet out-of-the-way beach. There were only one or two hotels there and a very popular beach bar called, from memory, the Surf Club.

Being Canadian, you are right.

I've had a few similar situations when I THOUGHT I was alone. I've also paddled and drifted by couples going at it. One time my wife and I were going on a hike and climbed up on a big rock overlooking the river. There was a couple going at it thinking they were alone and we quietly backed away. Numerous times. The best time I was 20 and on my first backpacking trip to Europe. I met a gorgeous Dutch girl at the hostel and after hanging out with her and her fat sister for three days I finally got the balls to make a move at a club one night. Quite often, actually, although the venue is not the most comfortable.  But my most memorable experience was with my ex-wife on a secluded beach in Kauai. Whilst we were doing our thing, a cat strolled down the beach to us and sat there a couple of feet away watching for a few minutes before turning around, squatting, and then doing his business there.  Then he proceeded to try and cover his deposit by scratching sand back over it, flinging most of the sand on top of us.  He finished scratching, looked back over his shoulder at us, then sauntered off.
