What Would You Do In The Following Situation...

The solution to your dilema (I can't spell that word right now) is oh so simple. Any costs, be they for the repair of a bike or repair of a person, would surely be paid upon the presentation of a bill. Once you see the bill/invoice then you have a deal, if no bill then no deal. Problem sorted.

Yes, standard procedure.

But, remember, ...T.I.T... also!

Surely it can't be hard for her to get a fake invoice. :) This is clearly a scam... she should've said she had to pay 10,000 for someone's hospital bill... that would've at least been believable. :D

Hosptial bill, bike repair bill, ... no matter. I would still need to see SOME bill...

Since that is not a possibility, it's a scam...

BTW, isn't 10,000 baht a pretty serious accident for a motorbike? I never have been in an accident there, but I thought when I was talking to my friend about his car one time that even car repairs were pretty cheap there. I just can't imagine a motorbike fender bender being 10,000 baht... your girlfriend would be in the hospital. At least that's how it seems to me from what I've heard. Anyone?

Yes, the high amount -- WITHOUT providing details of what was damaged -- was what raised a red flag in this situation (she just said that the other party's bike was effectively "totalled". Yeah, right. And no bodily injury involved? Not likely...)

You guys just don't read the information provided here.....I can think of at least one thread where hired motorbike returned....accusations of scratched paintwork.....if I recall.... passport held and request for 20k.........

Thai people are in some cases at the mercy of those in authority and their word is the law....so a demand for 10k damages is just that....no rhyme nor reason required for damage value....your fault I want 10k....and the police are backing me up!!!!!

Well she has probably borrowed from friends and neighbours.....probably on the motosi....which one way or another she could end up losing........

But nah.....move on....10k too important in your life......

I would check at the Police station to find out if the story is true. All accidents are reported, did she have insurance, if so the insurance company will know about the accident. Surely she must have the number of the other person involved, or the policeman. This sounds more like Jackanory. I bet you have enough to cover the 10,000baht..................be careful

I would also like to add that I am out of town at the moment, so cannot perform immediate due diligence. But it does sound fishy. And I have no intention of coughing up the money, given the lack of verifiable information.

In addition, I would also like to state that I have not known this particular woman very long, either (yes, another red flag and another reason to move on...)

It appears that it’s not only the motorbike, but you are also being taken for a ride.

I have 20 years experience of Thailand and it’s laws.

I can categorically tell you that there can be absolutely NO TRUTH to this story.

The police cannot (even in Thailand) play the Judgment of Solomon game or place someone in jail without first making a charge against them. In which direction the case goes after arrest & charge plus whether someone goes to jail and court or not has to be determined by a prosecutor who has the final say in all criminal cases, that`s if this is a criminal case, that I doubt.

If you are not convinced of what I am telling you, than insist on seeing a copy of the police report. If you receive a report in Thai, than pm me, I will give you my email address, then send a copy to me and I will get my daughter, who is a policewomen here to translate it for you and verify it’s authenticity.

Another ploy you could use is to ask your girlfriend for the name of a policeman and details of the police station. Explain to her that you wish to speak to the head policeman in order to determine what is going on. Do not fall for the old scam of speaking to someone on a mobile phone, it will probably be a PC Plod alias her Thai boyfriend.

Sorry, what she SHOULD have said is... Hey honey, can I borrow some money? LoL At least that would've been honest... I might even say yes once in a while if I have it... heh

Let's just say I've already been somewhat generous with this woman.

But I don't need a crystal ball to see where this is leading me now......(yikes)!

OK. Thanks for your input. As I stated, my request for documentation/details was declined (nervously, actually) so I did not pursue the matter further from that point. But, as others have stated, and as I know, myself, sometimes matters are settled here without formal due process if all parties involved get their hands tickled with the right amount of paper...

Too right. I have a good little side business going knocking up fake bills on the apple mac. We only ask for 25% - ww.buffalo_bill.com :D

If you and I put our heads together J, we might make a bit of beer money from troll threads. George doesn't necessarily have to have the monopoly on it after all. :)

I'm a little bit puzzled that some folks don't remember this scam. I can recall taking a bunch of guys over for the Millennium, over the course of two weeks they all met up with various girls, not all bg's , yet at least two of them got hit with the same story later. Maybe its back in vogue again, less buffaloes around to get sick I guess. :)

If money is not provided within say 3 days, police have said they intend to transfer ownership of TGF's motorbike to other party as compensation (or keep it themselves?)

I don't know about the rest of the story, however, this is complete <deleted>. Apart from a court ruling, which can take months or years to get, the only person who can authorise a transfer of ownership, is the owner, or a third party who has "power of attorney" for the owner.

<deleted>

Just ask the people in C.M. who were lucky enough to reclaim their bikes a couple of months ago after the lates regulatory purge.

(reason:no current tax label)

Fines ranged up to 20K or permanentaly impounded.

Harleys, ducati and a lot of high end jap bikes.

Yep different situation but the same sh#t

Seems the police have the final word on everything.

1 law 1 country 1 police force....1,000 interpretions

Ahh that's too bad. I've got some Thai acquaintenances of sorts that get a monthly allowance from their partners overseas. One of them gets 50,000 a month, and I swear to god manages to spend it sometimes in a week and is calling for more. LoL Oh man, if someone spent 50K in a week and called me to say they were out of money... I would be telling them to get their dancing shoes out and go make their own money for a few weeks. LoL

"Well, well, well...Time to move on..."

I find it hilarious that so many farang men get themselves tied in knots with their GFs emotional trauma and, rather than just solving it, they insist on posting every detail. Your GF lied to you. Get over it, and get on with your life. Until then, thanks for the entertainment.

Ball did she ask you for the 10k?

What do you think? She called, explained the situation, and said, "No, honey, don't help. I'll just sign over my motorbike and go to jail..."?

Of course, she asked for the money. What do women do?

Run away... far, far, away... (maybe leave a note or send an e-mail saying you've got a sick aunt, and the medicine costs 10,000 Baht..., and you'll be back from Farangistan in a month).

Trust your intuition... you wouldn't be here asking if you didn't want us to confirm what you already suspect.

Oh, we need the details... if not for educational purposes, at least for entertainment! :)

:) I lived in Thailand for 7 + years in Hua HIn before it got over run. This sounds to me as many old hands have suggested ,Won't go into details, a SCAM. We had two motorbikes and they are required to have "insurance". It costs a few hundred baht. It was a good story though. Don't ,Fall for it. They can be quite convincing and you just want to rationalize and believe for the sake of the Good P$#*yThere are some good ones out there. I know . My wife and I have been together for 10 years. and married for 7 in Oct.

10,000 baht broken down would mean severe frame damage as a newer bike(scooter type) would be less than 2300 for all new cosmetics. at 10,00 baht both people would be in the hospital. a used frame can be had for 4,000 baht at the auctions. Someone is dialing for dollars here & I do not doubt the police are in on it. as it is practice for impound it would also be practice for basic insurance to at least make an inquiry if the BIB isn't paid off otherwise what is the point of the insurance(unless your girl is one of the sliding type that drives uninsured) something sounds wrong at any rate. Kind of reminds me of the stories my neighbor would tell me about his girl losing her bracelet 6 times & he re bought her a new one each time....Truth was his wife told my girl she was sending the money home to mama & gambling. Let em keep the bike you can get a perfect 2nd hand Honda wave or the like for 20-27,000 baht 4000-6000 kilos or 17,000- to 20,000 if you know someone at the bike shops to pick one up for you. If it is a mangled frame who needs it anyway. Doubtful story on the motors cooter over the river Qwai story!!!

It does sound like a scam. But you can't say absolutely no truth, anymore than anyone else can.

The police can and do play the judgment of Solomon here as you put it.

In court it is the judge or judges who have the final say not the prosecutor.

The police do not have to produce copies of the report to anyone ( including lawyers - there is no rule of discovery in Thailand) other than a judge or on his order.

A similar thing happened to me about 8 years ago. The then g/f informed me that her brother had been in a motorcycle accident in Buri Ram, had caused major damage to another bike, and put the other rider in hospital. The police had her brother locked in the local police cells and would only release him when he came up with 30,000 Baht to sort everything out! "Can you give me 30000baht darling and then I can transfer it to papa's bank account and papa can take the money to the police and get my brother out of jail?" Hmmmm "Tell you what sweetheart, this is terrible, why don't we get the bus in the morning and go to Buri Ram together, then we can both go to the police station and get your brother out of jail, and then all 3 of us can go to the hospital and visit the other rider that was injured." Panic mode started. Telephone calls were made. More pleading for money and that Papa could sort things out without the need for us to spend hours and hours on a bus (very thoughtful of papa!). I refused to part with any money but did insist that I would travel to Buri Ram with her and help her out financially when we got there. She went along we my offer, however in the morning before we left the apartment to head for the bus station she recieved a telephone call. "Everything ok darling, no need to go Buri Ram, Police let brother go, no ploblem no more."

I want to chime in here to say thank you to all those who are sharing their experiences with the various Thai scams that they've encountered, and I would encourage others reading this topic not to feel ashamed but to step up to the plate and do the same. Having advance knowledge of Thai scammer modus operandi can save the unwary much grief (and baht).

But to all those who simply have nothing better to do than sit on their high horse (particularly if you don't even live in Thailand!), sip their beer and post insults, kindly f&*^ $%f. No one's amused (or helped) by your smart @ss humor

UPDATE:

[snip]

1. She's, in fact, a scammer/chiseler/con-artist and the whole thing was made up

I choose #1 and am now deeply suspicious of this woman and will be terminating the relationship because she refuses to provide more details for "personal" reasons.

Too bad. I found her to be of above-average looks, intelligence, and "womanly skills" (a classic femme fatale, wouldn't you say guys?)

Time to move on...

it seems the OP's question has been answered, and action already taken by the OP

on that basis, I dont see any reason why this thread needs to continue

unless the OP has some compelling reason for this to be re-opened? (in which case you can PM me with that reason)

otehrwise, closed since topic is resolved :)
