My poor dog is suffering from hip dysplasia and he is in quite a lot of pain.

Our whole first floor has been fitted with carpet so it's easier for him to walk,

we bought a big 800 liters plastic tank filled with water for him so he can exercise the right way.

We are also feeding him glucosamine tablets each day and painkillers.

He is only 10 months old and is already in a lot of pain. We are considering to have

a hip displacement done and I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good

hospital preferably in Bangkok or nearby. How much is the cost of this operation ?

Thanks in advance.

Sorry to hear this, 10 months is young. I understand that fish oils can aid joint problems in general, my dogs enjoy raw mackrel when they can and I use tinned as a standby to add to their food from time to time.

I think hip replacements are not done on dogs of this age.

More likely treatment will be TPO.

From following website: http://www.peteducation.com/article.cfm?c=2+2084&aid=444

Triple Pelvic Osteotomy (TPO): TPO is a procedure used in young dogs usually less than 10 months of age that have radiographs that show severe hip laxity, but have not developed damage to the joints. The procedure involves surgically breaking the pelvic bones and realigning the femoral head and acetabulum restoring the weight-bearing surface area and correcting femoral head subluxation. This is a major surgery and is expensive, but the surgery has been very successful on animals that meet the requirements.

My best guess for such a procedure would be a university vet department, no idea on price...

Yes Im aware of the procedure you mention but our local vet told us its too late and it should have been done before he was five months. At that time we had no idea about it.

I have been to kaset vet university with him a few times already because he had a blood parasite when we got him and I did asked them back then to do a full check of everything. I'm a no vet so I have no idea what needs to be checked but they told us he was fine. Well.....apparently not. I

I don't know the cost of the operation, only that Thong Lo Animal Hospital is one of the best in this area and they do have a physical therapy tank for dogs.

what breed?

depending on the breed, 10 months can be too late or ok... the very large breeds take almost two years to reach full growth so there is more leeway although every vet surgeon has his/her own criterion. (bullmastiff, dog de bordeaux, gt. dane et al); for boxers and german shepherds that pretty much is the limit.

I have a golden retriever in boarding that showed severe HD at 5 months of age. He was in so much pain that he refused to walk and to eat.

I went to the vet and they suggested painkillers. That didn't really work, the pain was too much. It did make him eat though, but he still hardly moved. The vet warned against glucosamine and chondroitin supplements as it can also become too much with negative effects as a result. The exact details of the why's I forgot. He did mention hip replacement but for that the dog needed to go to BKK (we are in Chiang Mai).

Anyway, the vet treatment didn't really work and the prospective for this poor pup was quite poor.

So, with full consent of the owners we did the following:

1. We put him on a raw food diet with no grains, rice, veggies whatsoever, just meat bones and organ from different animal protein sources (chicken, pork, buffalo, duck, fish. Can also be lamb, goat, ostrich etc, but that's above the budget)

2. Supplement with Vitamin C upto bowel tolerance(Brand Hi-Cee which contains Ascorbic acid in combination with Sodium ascorbate. This combination is important as then the dog can absorb it. Only ascorbic acid will be pee-ed out)

3. Controlled exercise with lots of swimming (as a real golden that wasn't a big issue for him :))

4. Homeopathic treatment by a hom.vet abroad.

One week after this treatment this dog was off the painkillers and moved around with much more ease. Now, several months later the dog is running and playing around, swims several times a day and can almost act like a normal dog. Almost, as the deformed hips are still deformed, but his mobility has improved considerably and he has no pain. He is still on a raw food diet and is still under treatment with the homeopath, meaning that when I see he is slightly going down hill I contact the homeopath again.

Since I saw this happening with this pup, I saw a second pup favoring his right hind paw at 9 months of age. Diagnosis: HD

A third pup having hip problems at 5 months of age. A 4th pup having severe mange at 2 month of age. Another pup with hind quarter problems at 4 1/2 months of age. Yet again another pup that became very finicky at 2 months of age, developed meningitis at 4 months of age and bad mange at 7 months of age. Etc. etc. etc.

ALL of them received several combined vaccines at early age and with only two weeks apart and ALL of them had vaccine reactions after their shots. Mange is immune related and, although the connection between the vaccines and HD it is not (yet) proven, the distemper vaccine virus has been found back in the bone tissues of dogs that developed HOD (Hypertrophic osteodystrophy). If it can cause HOD, then it is very possible it can cause other bone diseases as well, me thinks. The distemper (vaccine) virus can also caused meningitis.

Am I upset by this? Yes, sure I am. Seeing (or reading about) those young animals, that should be happily bouncing and playing around and then so much disabled while their lives just started, is just plain horrible.
