I think if the marriage was bad, they should split up. I am saying this because I was one of the kids that parents fought all the time (but tried to stay together for a long time). After they got divorce, they kept it civil and became friends. They communicated better as friends.

If you will really keep distance and not interfere, I don't think it's so wrong.

Good advice, sbk. Many men are weak sods and instead of fixing a marriage that might be fixable they will run off with the first skirt that shows him attention. The third woman in such an affair almost always comes out a loser.

If he does leave his wife, he will be in some turmoil and a relationship formed at that point may not last. Immediately coming out of an unhappy marriage is not the best time to start a new relationship and there is an excellent chance of it not working out even if the two people were otherwise soul mates.

Need also to consider the possibility that he will ultimately blame you, at least in part, for the break up. Even if he doesn't regret leaving his wife, he probably will regret the effect on his children and on his relationship with them.
