Section 2.9 regarding temporary stay in the Kingdom states:

"In the case of enrolment in a private educational institution (i.e. language school): Permission will be granted for a period as confirmed by the institution but shall not be more than one year at a time".

Why is that even when a educational institution confirms study for one year and this confirmation is endorsed by the Ministry of Education, do Immigration only give a 90 day permit to stay. I hate to think that it is only so the department can collect Baht 1900 for each 90 day stay.

My understanding is that when you go to Immigration near the end of the first 90 days, you pay the 1900Bt fee and thereafter, you are only required to do the regular (free) 90-day residence reporting requirement.

It is to check that you are still studying, for a minimum of 4 hours a week on average.

In my experience, and from what I have been told by others, they never check.

Non-Immigrant visas, 'O', 'B', 'ED' or whatever, are only good for 90 days per entry. Extensions of stay can be for up to 1 year, depending on how immigration sees things.

That I am aware. I am asking really about the Extention to Stay (Permit to Stay) specially with regard to ED Visa.

I should add that at a certain Immigration Office, persons meeting the above quoted requirements for over 14 months were given 1 year Extension of Stay. Then several months ago a new head arrived and changed it to the way she had been doing at Pattaya.

ED extensions are only give for 90 days at a time if you are studying in a private school. Those studying at a university may get a year. This is by te new Police Rules of a few months agol

Are you referring to: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/post-a29954-.html/ Unless I am wrong, this I understand is the period permitted at the point of entry into Thailand.

I am dscussing Police Order 777/2551 .... (or is there a later one?) Section 2.9 regarding temporary stay in the Kingdom:

"In the case of enrolment in a private educational institution (i.e. language school): Permission will be granted for a period as confirmed by the institution but shall not be more than one year at a time".

You are trying to make it mean something it does not. Private education institution does not mean language school. It covers everything but primarily refers to university. The allowance is "not more than one year". So a limited study school, which is obviously being used by some as a loophole to stay in Thailand and pursue other endeavors, and which is more likely to be transient in nature, has a lower extension period to make sure at least some study is being done. Seems logical to me.

That could be the reason, I have seen a very few cases when extension was longer than 90 days, 9 months for example to to a full year and I have also seen one year extension. Unfortunately it does not happen often so the reasonable expectation is 90 days at a time.
