animatic
The Thais just don't want cut rate rice swamping the subsidized rice cartel. Which HAS been happening, and causing lots of political crap at several levels. It is not so much an effort to keep Cambodia impoverished, but one of not letting Cambodia drive Thailands farmers into an even deeper red, and more deeply RED. True, but Cambodia has a lot more to export than just rice. Clothing and textiles, for instance....Thailand could easily ban rice imports and still fairly allow other Cambodian goods to be exported and trucked into Thailand. I'm also thinking about the Thai trade deficit with Cambodia and the extortionate rates Thailand is charging the Cambodian trucks at the border. I guess the Thai truckers will have to continue to make round trips, keeping them employed well fed.

I guess the Thai truckers will have to continue to make round trips, keeping them employed well fed. They are worried that a hidden layer of rice is coming under textiles and other imports, and fed into the rice pledging market. If you must off load the trucks, then; a ) either that rice is not cross transported, or b ) Thai's make money on it off of the Cambodians and or their Thai importing partners, in essence partly amortizing the loss on the Thai side of economic imperatives. EffectiveAnger
^Yes, but how do we know that the Thai trucks aren't already doing the majority of this sneaking rice into Thailand business? No, let's blame it on the Cambodians! Let's stop them from encroaching on our Thai markets and keep our goods flowing into the Cambodian markets. As long as we Thais can continue to keep things status quo, our countries will have peace. It's our way or the highway! Remember, our country is developing and yours is NOT! brahmburgers
The balkanization of SE Asia. If this keeps up, every hill will claim its own fiefdom with its own flag. Solution: escort all the people out and allow wild animals to re-inhabit the place. Put up solar powered monorails for tourists, and declare it a natural reserve. Allow wild animals to re-inhabit what place, the Poi Pet border?! Excuse me, but some of us need to use that border once in awhile. I'm all for wild animals and saving their habitat, but come on now... Aren't you talking about something unrelated to the snarl up of trucks... Preah Vihear Temple by any chance? Sorry, but I don't see much of a connection here.
