Ok so ive got my new copy of Snow Leopard sat on my desk, My iMac has been doing backup's with time machine to an external HDD, I was thinking of just popping the SL Disk into the iMac and following the on screen prompts , Then I had a thought , ive got only a few paid applications I use on a daily basis, including ACDSee Pro Beta, ( at the moment a Free Version ) which I like to use instead of iphoto , I was thinking if I wipe the Hard drive clean and start from scratch . like going back to day one , could I some how then just migrate my paid applications from the Time Machine back up , to the new Snow Leopard version, and they would run Ok, my thought on this is I would have a new fresh system free of the clutter Etc ive accumulated , plus I would still have my few paid applications back working as normal

Is this possible ..?

Thanks

Easy use migration assistant.

I am about to get onto the "same boat" my SL should be here Tuesday... so promised, from BananaIT, apparently Mac in BKK ran out. :D

Migration assistant? Where does one find that? :D It seems to me last time I did a clean install, on the Mac, I had to reinstall all the Programs... is this a way around having to do that? Perhaps a dumb question? Can you explain further? :D

I just hope it does not take 17 hours for the Mac updates this time :D I think my internet speed is better now... :)

So, ACDsee has a Mac Version finally? Not seen that on their email notifications... I use on the PC... But have Aperture on the Mac... Not sure which I like best... although for simple stuff I find Picasa is very good.

I see we have the same Ativar, boy that will make for confusion (LOL)

I just hope not to be bashing the computer too much going through the upgrade! I was just reading the Mac site, seems some people are pulling there hair out, with the upgrade! :D

I tried both ways, first I did an upgrade from Leopard to an external hard drive, then I did a clean install on my main drive and transferred old files and re-installed all my applications. I noticed a big difference in speed doing a clean install. It requires a little work to make sure you don't lose your old files and settings, but highly recommended.

If you use the Migration Assistant it will still restore old applications and settings, thus slowing down the system if you have an old installation of Leopard with a lot of "excess baggage".

In any case, make sure you have a full backup of your hard drive.

Thanks for the reply , If I do a clean install using only Snow Leopard Would the installation include all the Apple applications like iWorks Etc, that come

with the original Installation OS X DVD, if Snow Leopard does include all the original Apple applications, I would like then only to migrate some of my paid applications from my Time Machine backup onto the new Snow Leopard, hopefully leaving behind all the un wanted applications and Crap on my old version . Have I got this Right

Things like iWork, Aperture are not included in the OS. Even iLife has a yearly update that must be purchased but the present one should be included. I find it quite easy to go through and clean out the "junk" myself. In addition I have an app that cleans out all the unused languages and architectures which can also save you gigs of space. As long as you have backups just go ahead and run with it. If you have any problems you will end up learning a lot and may be able to give answers rather than ask questions in the future. We learn from our mistakes. Be brave.

Like Village Farang said, applications like iWork, iLife etc are not included on the SL installation cd. But if you have legal copies of those programs, you should have the installation cd. :)

I haven't tried to restore an application from a Time Machine-backup in SL, so I can't tell if it works properly.

This is what I am going to try.......

Erase my iMac Hard Drive, Install Snow Leopard, and use the Migration assistant to migrate my paid application from my Time Machine Backup on an external HDD, to Snow Leopard , Insert my original Apple OS X DVD , and use the option to install bundled applications only ( iLife ) . So hopefully I will have a clean Snow Leopard installed along with getting back just the original iLife software and my paid for applications .

You will also need to download the 74meg 10.6.1 update as it helps resolve some issues.

Ive just spotted this in an article about installing Snow Leopard ..

The next window to appear is called “Your Internet Connection”. Select “Using DHCP” for the TCP/IP Connection Type. Follow the prompts to fill in your Apple ID and Registration information. After you’ve filled out their “A Few More Questions” form and created your user account, you are almost done!

The part I am concerned about is this ... Follow the prompts to fill in your Apple ID and Registration information

From What I remember when I bought the iMac, The Tech Guy in the shop set every thing up, and I supplied the Account Log In details, So I am not too sure where I would find my .... Apple ID and Registration information

any One have an Idea Please ..?

Thanks
