Tramadol is addictive and reacts badly with alcohol. I recommend Temgesic for severe pain. It is probably one of the finest, non addictive analgesics available.

It is expensive, but excellent. Tiny pills are dissolved sub-lingually (under the tongue) for rapid relief of pain.

It is available at some Thai pharmacies. The reason it is frowned upon is because it is used by diamorphine and cocaine addicts to alleviate withdrawal symptoms.

When used to treat pain it is superb.

Anybody have an inside track  on where to get strong prescription pain medication without a doctors approval?

Why wouldn't you see a doctor ?

I would ask the same - fairely inexpensive for a quick office visit w/meds included. However any Rx will give you meds of the non-narcotic type - just know what you want. Perhaps 500-1000mg Motrin Tablets?

Here's an abstract from a comparative study of tramadol (Tramal, Mabron, etc) vs buprenorphine (Temgesic) that comes out in favour of tramadol for the patient's greater ability to tolerate tramadol. Other sources say tramadol has a low potential for addiction.

I can't speak for tripxcore but as a frequent migraine sufferer I can tell you it's just not practical to go see a doctor if you need pain medications often. They tend to give no more than 10 at a time and only if you are actually suffering at that moment.

The last thing you want to do when you have a migraine is go to the hospital with their bright fluorescent lights to beg for painkillers :o

Also the doctors fee adds up if you need a consultation for every 10 tablets you buy.

Thats because it is an Opioid and a narcotic analgesic, but is thought to be less addictive than e.g. Morphine.

Tramadol has never been addictive to me,but maybe that's just me.This narcotic analgesic (Temgesic)would seem to be quite additive as well. :o

It might be helpful to know what the pain is you're experiencing. If it's arthritis-related, news from the States yesterday indicates the COX-2 inhibitors (Vioxx, Celebrex, Bextra) are really coming under scrutiny, with Bextra taken off the market yesterday, leaving only Celebrex available under prescription (for now, anyways).

Having said that, I'm curious about what COX-2 inhibitors are available in Thailand. If my choices become: 'maybe live longer, but in excruciating pain' or maybe die earlier, but pain-free,' I'd like to be able to make that decision myself -- in fact, I already have. And if I can get COX-2s in Thailand, then, so much the better.

This is definitely the worst country for strong pain meds (opiates) at least by prescription that I have encountered. In America, I can get oxycontin as the strongest painkiller I personally take and vicodin (hydrocodon) extra strength 7.5mg or 10mg is considered relatively mild stuff for me. In this country, the strongest legal prescription opiate I have been able to acquire is Tylenol with 15mg of codeine phosphate which hardly even dulls my TMJ pain. Half the doctors here dont even know what vicodin is, and the other half know that it isnt available in this country furthermore, they think I am some heroin junkie for even asking for it. I think the heroin/opium problem has extended itself into a general cultural taboo against opiates for any reason. Once when I asked my doctor for pain meds, he said "In Thailand, we would rather cure the underlying cause of your pain, then provide medicine to mask the pain" which is logical enough, and then I prepaid for worthless infrared therapy sessions that did absolutely zilch for me. Now I just bring a giant bottle of vicodin from the USA everytime I fly into Thailand. Never had a problem with customs, but ###### its not like I ever see them do anything anyways.

I am not an opiate addict, I dont consistently take any opiate for extended durations to avoid tolerance and addiction.

Pain relief comes under the umbrella of anesthesia: All opiate analgesics are dependent upon the liver function to work: eg. Codeine in 'Para-codol' drugs rely on the liver to break down the codeine phosphate into morphine.

Pain relief differs from person to person, much of it CNS (Central Nervous System) related: Hence acupuncture is often an excellent 'pain' reliever.

Drugs are a last resort or else a 'short term' solution.

Paracetamol is actually a superb analgesic, yet pooh pooh'd by those in pain.

Four grammes a day with a healthy liver will dull most pain in a human. Only the human mind convinces the body that stronger more exotic analgesics work better.

Celebrex available OTC in Thailand, but not a good general painkiller. Tramadol only 50mg capsules -- much better are 200mg slow-release from the West. If you see a doctor at Bumrungrat hospital they may prescribe stronger ... at a price.

Paracetamol-codeine is good but not available either ... withdrawn after problems with addicts. Morphine is only available for in-patients. Almost drives one to seek the illegal alternatives in case of severe pain! Or bring your own supplies.

Paracetamol-codeine available. I dont know about over the counter but some hospitals carry it, and some dont. The ones that dont told me that although they dont carry it, other hospitals do. My information is current since I just got a new scrip for it 3 days ago. I get 50 at a time, but I have to take 3 or 4 just to get the pain out. My dad just flew in to Bangkok with my supply of oxycontin... :o The pain has been gone ever since.

My wife has stacks of pills for migraine - she only saw the doctor onec & she prescribed a shed load.

Trevor is correct in his previous post. Paracetemol codeine is no longer available at Bumrungrad. A different medication with codeine is now offered instead. In my last post, I must have gotten some of the last paracodeine they had in stock.
