Tourist Visa Beijing

I was wondering if anyone has experience of getting a tourist visa in Beijing. I currently have one recent double entry visa both entries extended for 30 days plus a few old (1,3 and 4 years) visas not extended. I'm hoping it won't be a problem. The issue i'm worried about is having a return ticket. I won't even have a flight to Thailand booked at the time let alone a ticket out of there. I have never had to provide this in the past but my visas have come from the UK and Oz. The Beijing consulate website states this information is required?

Previous reports in this forum indicate the need for a return ticket out of the country. Is a common request from many embassies/consulates in this part of the world.

Got all my visa to China out of their Bangkok embassy.

Each time, I was asked to produce both my return ticket and proof of hotel/accomadation confirmed reservation.
