My Thai wife is currently living in NZ with me. She has NZ residence. I would like to know, if & when she is eligible for citizenship here, is she able to keep her Thai passport? I have heard of several different scenarios. A friend of mine who has a Green Card for the USA told me that he doesn't want to get US citizenship because it means he will have to give up his Thai passport & citizenship. Is this correct? Do the rules vary from country to country? I remember meeting a Thai woman living in NZ a few years ago who said she was going back to Thailand but was going to have to do border runs & buy property in her sister's name because she was no longer a Thai citizen.

a thai person can take up their spouses citizenship without losing their Thai nationality. It used to be the case, but that rule was changed back in 1992. My daughters have Thai/NZ/Australian nationality, and have travelled all around the place on all those passports. No problems whatsoever for your wife to become a naturalise Kiwi.
